COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS 31.07.25

Just three council vacancies were fought over this week, two of which were Labour defences.  They managed to fend off a challenge from Green newcomers in east London, where the Labour vote share plummeted by almost 26 per cent.  There was a large swing there from Labour to both the Greens and Reform, who were also newcomers in that ward.

Labour endured a similar collapse in their vote share in Warrington, where Reform UK gained their first seat on that council.  Elsewhere, the Lib Dems completed a routine hold in their south west stronghold, where Labour did not even bother putting up a candidate this time around.  That's understandable, as their 11 per cent last time would have guaranteed them last place, even without their now trademark slump...

WOKE WEDNESDAYS #36

Last month the approach to London's Wembley Stadium was decked out in 60 foot long rainbow colours - not the traditional 'Pride flag', but the dystopian Alphabet flag aka the 'Progress Pride flag'.  The flags  were hung either side of the road as far as the eye could see, making sure that no-one could fail to realise it was 'Pride Month'.

No-one caused a fuss, the local council just got on with their leftist display and the masses tolerated it.

Cut to the sleepy village of Claxton in Norfolk, population just 298 and dare we say it's probably near enough 100 per cent British born and bred.  The committee at the local village hall announced last year that they wanted to fly a mere 9 foot flag pole featuring the Union flag, albeit only on certain days such as public holidays.  However, some locals reacted so strongly against the proposal that one would be forgiven for thinking that Claxton was actually a predominantly Catholic village in Northern Ireland.

However, this is not the case, and Brit after Brit complained about the idea that their own national flag could be flown in their village, which happens to be located in... Great Britain.

While the local parish council approved the flag pole, one parisioner argued that the committee should make do with bunting, because a flag on a pole presents 'a fine line between patriotism and nationalism'.  A resident named Glynnis White demanded to know the committee's 'motivations' for flying such a flag, adding: "The flag is often used as a symbol against immigration and it would worry me if it was being used in the wrong way".

Good grief!

Another resident, John Garcia, complained: "People have been really riled up about this, I don't know if I've ever seen the Union Jack flown at a village hall before and it does have certain connotations."  He never saw a Union flag flying outside a village hall?  Has he never left Claxton in his entire life or did he just come in off a boat?  Another complainant argued that the cost of the flag pole could be put to better use, such as installing central heating and/or a heat pump.  A heat pump, you say?  Perhaps we are getting to the bottom of the bourgeois demographic behind these complaints...

Another unnamed villager also complained to the local MP - Labour's newly elected Ben Goldsborough.  However, Goldsborough decided to play Devil's advocate and sit on the fence: "The most important thing is making sure that all residents feel listened to" he said.

It is not clear how many of the individuals involved in the complaints were one and the same, but thankfully there were voices of sanity also.  Nancy Harrison, who moved to the village in 2022, said: "Why should we be ashamed of our flag?  If it puts people off from moving here then they shouldn't."

Bravo Nancy, although it's desperately sad that it had to be said at all.

So there we have it folks, in modern Britain we can deck our high streets out in far left Progress 'Pride' flags, but actually flying our own national flag presents a problem.

A FRUIT & NUT REVENGE

Jeremy Corbyn was reportedly not best pleased when brash young MP Zarah Sultana blurted out the news about a new hard left party on the horizon.  The official announcement came some weeks later and was distinctly underwhelming.  There was no party name, with an interim title given as 'Your Party'.  Therefore, those of us who have been referring to it simply as 'Fruit and Nut' (Sultana the fruit and you know the rest) have no choice but to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.

Hence, in the YouTube video below, Richey refers to Fruit and Nut throughout.  This is our shared analysis of the dire threat that - combined with the rise of Reform UK - Corbyn's new venture poses to Keir Starmer and his odious party...

Further to the video, you may have seen bold claims that despite its embryonic stage, Fruit and Nut have surged past Reform UK and every other party in terms of membership.  This is simply not true, as technically the new party has zero members.  People have been invited to 'sign up' on a web page, but this is not the same as membership.  No fees are paid, no cards are handed out, those who 'sign up' merely join a mailing list.  The party has not even been registered with the Electoral Commission.

Those on the left getting excited by the media buzz will be sorely disappointed in the short term.  They are not going to enjoy the same surge in support that Reform UK has recently.  Fruit and Nut will only appeal to certain demographics as discussed in the above video.  They will not be winning council by-elections all over the place any time soon, but combined with the rise of Reform they absolutely will present a major threat to Labour's parliamentary majority when it comes to a general election.

There is a political shift happening.  We live in interesting times.

TOON TUESDAY #65

Once again cartoonists from both left and right-leaning rags have laid into Labour this past week, glorious to see.  It's not often we feature Martin Rowson's strangely (poorly?) drawn efforts from The Guardian, but there's no mistaking the woeful sight of Streeting, Reeves and Starmer waiting in A&E as doctors go on strike.

The Guardian's sister rag The Observer issued an apology last week after Zarah Sultana was triggered by a cartoon depicting her on a bag of sultanas.  The MP raged on X: "Brownfacing a box of raisins and mocking my surname, exactly what you’d expect from a right-wing hack who is the daughter of an aristocrat and ex-Tory MP."

Quite how one 'brownfaces' a box of raisins, which are inherently brown anyway, is beyond anyone's comprehension, but The Observer swiftly issued an apology and removed the toon.  However, this still wasn't enough for snowflake Zarah who took to X again:  "This is mealy-mouthed and refuses to call it what it is: racism.  It doesn’t even have the decency to name me, let alone offer a direct apology."

The offending cartoon can be seen below, but you'll have to squint in order to see the reference that upset Zarah.  The sultana box can be found to the left hand side of Marx's Das Capital.

Also, look out for an Ozzy Osbourne reference from Dave Brown, who echoes our suspicions about Angela Rayner's leadership ambitions...

MEME MONDAY #45

Karl enjoyed a long weekend break with the family last week, so the memes were a little slow in coming and there were no Facebook Stories uploaded.  Normal service will resume this week, including the return of Woke Wednesday.

Tue 22 Jul - 62 shares on Facebook
Wed 23 Jul - 189 shares
Fri 25 Jul - 862 shares
Fri 25 Jul - 31 shares.  Old Lembit has veered right in his middle age, which
is a well trodden political trajectory (older people rarely veer right to left).
The result of this emoji poll was as follows:
YES = 481
NO = 31
Sat 26 Jul - 15 shares
Sat 26 Jul - 119 shares
Sat 26 Jul - 78 shares
Sun 27 Jul - 11 shares.  We simply cannot let Starmer discuss the Middle

BOATWATCH #20

Reported crossings are down for the third week in a row, lending Chairman Starmer some (brief) respite from his shitshow.  There's still no news of any boat people leaving, but that agreement with Macron is worthless as we still end up with a net gain of invaders as France will simply replace any that are returned while the boats continue to sail.  Absurd.

ROYAL WELSH POLITICAL ANIMAL

Earlier this week Richey attended the Royal Welsh Show with his partner and spoke with various activists on our wavelength, while Labour kept a low profile.  He summed up his observations in the following YouTube video...

While Kemi Badenoch, Nigel Farage and Rhun ap Iorwerth (Plaid Cymu) attended the show this year, they were the only major national party leaders to do so.  Starmer could not possibly have attended, even if he had wanted to, on safety grounds.  Labour's disgusting treatment of farmers meant that he would have been given a frosty reception at best.  Likewise, we can find no record of a Green Party presence, which sums up their own hard left attitude to agriculture.

In fairness, First Minister Eluned Morgan was in attendance, although she appears to have been kept away from the public as much as possible - not that many people would recognise her in any case.  She must be the most anonymous First Minister since devolution began!

COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS 24.07.25

Seven seats were up for grabs this week, with Labour defending just the one (Cardiff), which they held despite losing more than a fifth of their vote.  Reform are the new challengers in that ward, surging into second place from scratch.

The Labour vote was down in all six of the seats the party contested and they finished a humiliating last place in two of them.

Reform gained a seat from the Tories in South London, but the Conservatives faired better elsewhere.  They managed to hold off challenges from Reform newcomers in three seats, while they nominally gained a seat from the Greens in Rutland.  The Greens failed to field a candidate in the latter, providing a free-for-all for the remaining parties.

TOON TUESDAY #64

Cartoonists had lots of governmental issues to get their teeth into during the past week - including super injunctions, suspended MPs and reducing the voting age.  Both left-leaning and right-leaning rags laid into Starmer in equal measure, while the renewed suspension of Diane Abbott brought out some Corbyn references...

MEME MONDAY #44

Another busy week for Karl with 14 memes and four Facebook Stories to his credit...

Mon 14 Jul - 285 shares
Tue 15 Jul - 466 shares.  This one struck a chord with Richey, who was told
recently that he cannot claim a penny of universal credit as his partner is
earning.  Unlike boat people and EU migrants, he paid in all his life and
the one time he needed the state to step in and help, he was told to do one!

huge engagement with almost 900 comments.
