PESTON UNMASKED

Robert Peston has been one of the media's most high profile Covid fanatics throughout the pandemic.  However, like so many who appear to crave restrictions 'for safety', he doesn't practice what he preaches.  A clip has gone viral showing Peston prior to the latest Downing Street press conference in which he chats openly to a fellow hack with his face mask hanging down under his chin.  This apparently takes place 15 minutes before the conference begins, immediately prior to which Peston pops his mask on.

Watch below.

Peston was among the first journalists to demand a mask mandate, way back in April 2020.

Note that Peston mentions the importance of preventing viral spread through coughing.  Well, listen to the first thing he did upon removing his mask in order to ask a question at yesterday's press conference...

These people are trolling you.  Do not comply.

As for demanding that people be ordered to keep away from hospitality venues, Peston should be barred from every pub in the land.  That is, of course, if there are any left following the coming onslaught.

WHITTOME SACKED, AGAIN

Labour's Nadia Whittome found out she'd been sacked for the second time this year - live on ITV's Peston.  Whittome has been removed as parliamentary private secretary, an unpaid support role to the front bench.  She had defied party whips to vote against the Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans) Bill.  The bill is designed to protect British military veterans from prosecution for historical actions.

Whittome was informed of her dismissal last night on Robert Peston's show.  Watch the moment below, in particular Tory MP Steve Baker's tortured expression as she excuses her actions.

Earlier this year Whittome was sacked from her temporary role as a carer after speaking out about PPE shortages that were reportedly false.

The Overseas Operations Bill passed its second reading by 331-77.  It was opposed by the SNP, Liberal Democrats and 18 Labour MPs.  Two other parliamentary private secretaries voted against the bill - Olivia Blake and Beth Winter - both of whom agreed to stand down from their roles.  Whittome refused to resign and was therefore sacked.

In addition to Blake and Winter, Whittome was joined in opposing the bill by other hard left colleagues in the Socialist Campaign Group (SCG), as follows.

Diane Abbott
Apsana Begum
Richard Burgon
Ian Byrne
Jeremy Corbyn - didn't take him long to return to his old tradition of defying party whips!
Ian Lavery
Rebecca Long-Bailey
John McDonnell
Kate Osamor
Kate Osborne
Bell Ribeiro-Addy
Lloyd Russell-Moyle
Zarah Sultana
Jon Trickett
Claudia Webbe

The hard left have been quick to defend Whittome (and also slam members of the SCG who didn't oppose the bill, such as Clive Lewis and Rachael Maskell).  Twitter users have also pointed out that when Whittome was sacked from her carer role, a certain knight of the realm sprang to her defence...

Whittome retains the Labour whip.

HIGH PRAISE FOR BRILLO

End of the road for yet another Andrew Neil vehicle

When the BBC announced 520 job cuts in its news division it was perhaps no great surprise to see Andrew Neil's show was one of the casualties.  His latest show was only commissioned last autumn and had not broadcast since March.  In recent years Neil's presence on the Beeb has become increasingly sparse.  Daily Politics was canned in 2018, This Week finished a year later and he is seldom seen at the helm of Politics Live these days.

As is always the case when there is any suggestion Andrew Neil is binned, there has been a backlash.  The BBC have stressed that they are in talks with him about a new venture, but there are rumours that the 71-year-old has been approached by other broadcasters.  Presumably ITV are one of those clamouring for his services.  We can only hope they are lining him up to replace the awful Robert Peston!

Prominent figures in journalism and across the political divide heaped praise on Neil following news of the BBC cancellation.

Some on the hard left were less complimentary, because their little spiteful minds can only recall instances when Neil has mauled their idols.  But let's not forget that following his decimation of Jeremy Corbyn ahead of the election, Boris Johnson avoided Neil like the plague and never did sit down for an interview.  He wouldn't have refused to meet Neil if he thought his interviewer was going to give him an easy ride.

Remain campaigner Femi Izawally invoked Neil's ire with a tweet in which he labelled the broadcaster "biased and scarily right-wing".  Bad move.

As for Little Owen, who has been involved in a long-running spat with Andrew Neil, some would have expected a gloating response.  However, Jones has his own problems worrying about job cuts at The Guardian.  Jones tweeted: "Andrew Neil falsely claimed that I repeatedly tried to get his BBC career cancelled.  He's still refused to withdraw this claim.  So let me put on record that I don't support this decision, while standing by holding Neil to account for his public record".

The ever classy Neil later tweeted that The Spectator was a broad church and didn't see why Jones couldn't work for the rag if he got the boot from The Guardian.

This seems as good a time as any to revisit their famous bust-up on This Week...

On Saturday morning Neil tweeted that The Spectator was booming while other media outlets are in decline.  He notes that his newspaper now outsells weekday editions of The Guardian.  Brutal as ever.

FULL BRIEFINGS FOR SIR SQUEAKY

Keir Starmer spoke to Robert Peston last night and confirmed that prior to Boris Johnson's hospitalisation, the Prime Minister had bent over backwards to accommodate the new Labour leader.  Starmer has full access to all the latest information on the fight to contain Covid-19.

Despite the seemingly amicable co-operation, Starmer has spent the first few days of his leadership viciously attacking the government over its handling of Covid-19, including a highly critical article in the Sunday Times.  When Peston asks him why he can't scrutinise the government 'on the inside' as well as the outside, Starmer awkwardly dodges the question.  Why?  Because Starmer wants to continue attacking the government publicly and make as much political capital out of the crisis as possible.  In this respect he really is no different to his predecessor.

Not quite sure why Sir Squeaky gave his interview from a dark residential street - was he scared he would wake his wife up or is there something he doesn't want us to see on his bookshelf?

TAKING THE NORTH-EAST FOR GRANTED?

A podcast from Robert Peston earlier this week focused on the north-east of England.  Despite being one of the Labour heartlands, Peston's correspondent said there was a distinct lack of Labour presence n the campaign thus far.  Listen below.

If Corbyn's name is truly bombing on the doorsteps of the north-east this is yet another blow to Labour's chances of forming a coalition government.  In YouGov's big regional polls last month it was one of only three regions where Labour maintained a lead over the Tories and remained the strongest Labour region outside London.  Perhaps, as Peston's correspondent alludes, therein lies the problem.  London should not be Labour's strongest region, the Labour heartlands are traditionally the north of England and south Wales.  Corbyn and co are increasingly, and quite rightly, being seen as a London clique.  If Labour were to win next month then all four of the Great Offices of State would be occupied by London MPs - Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbott and Thornberry.  They truly are the Party of London and they are going to lose many seats in their heartlands next month.
