WOKE WEDNESDAYS #38

We're in Scotland for a second consecutive Woke Wednesday, with more Supreme Court-defying trans nonsense on display.  The Edinburgh Fringe is a huge festival that takes place across most of August and hosts millions of visitors each year.  Littered with live performances, combined with the proliferation of alcohol, there have been multiple complaints of lewd conduct, sexual harassment and serious sex crimes over the years.

In 2017 a former aide to John Major and Tony Blair raped a 19-year-old woman after luring the drunk festival goer into his camper van.  A 20-year-old festival goer claimed she was raped at a Fringe party in 2012.  A performer also claimed she was raped by a fellow comic - while another watched.  The alleged perpetrator later appeared on stage with her and 'slapped [her] arse'.  In 2019 the actors' union Equity called on festival organisers to 'do more' to tackle sexual harassment.  Multiple examples of performers being abused and assaulted were used to highlight the union's demand.

At the time, organisers responded with the following statement:

“Everyone who is part of the Fringe - be they a performer, member of the crew, producer, audience member, critic and so on - has the right to feel safe and supported.  The Fringe Society takes complaints of this nature very seriously and is already in contact with Equity to better understand the nature of these complaints.  We would urge anyone who has experienced inappropriate behaviour of this sort to contact Police Scotland directly.”

However, in 2025 it was revealed that a popular Fringe venue was providing gender neutral toilets, giving biological males the opportunity to invade female spaces where they are at their most vulnerable.  Underbelly Bristo Square displayed a message adjacent to the customary ladies and gents signs that invited guests to use 'whichever toilet best fits your identity or expression'.  A male photographer who snapped the signs asked a member of staff if he could use the female toilet, to which the reply was: "Yes".

As the news went viral, a backlash began to grow from feminist campaigners.  They used the recent Supreme Court verdict on biological sex to support their argument.  Tory MSPs were among those who complained directly to the venue and the pressure soon forced a u-turn.  The offending signs were removed and the segregated ladies and gents restored, albeit with a third toilet that retains the 'gender neutral' option.

Underbelly Bristo Square confirmed the u-turn: "We have updated our signage and facilities to clearly provide separate toilets for men only, for women only, alongside a separate inclusive option for anyone regardless of how they identify."

The Scottish government, led by the leftists of the SNP, is still resisting the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling.  Clearly, this has created fertile conditions for organisations in Scotland to ignore the ruling.  Feminist groups are resurgent following the Supreme Court decision and there will undoubtedly be litigation if woke businesses and the public sector fail to observe the law.

COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS 26.06.25

A whopping ten by-elections were held this week, from Edinburgh in the north to Sussex in the south.  Labour were defending half the seats and finished the day on just one, a hold in Stevenage.  Labour's vote share was down in every single seat, from a marginal decrease of 1.7 per cent in Edinburgh to a crushing 34.3 per cent in Chorley, Lancs.

Reform continued their good form, with gains in Basildon and Rossendale from local independents and also taking a Labour seat in Sheffield.  In all three seats they came from nowhere to win first time round.

The other Labour losses came at the hands of the Greens in London, Conservatives in Chorley and Lib Dems in Edinburgh.  Labour enjoyed a narrow lead in Edinburgh on the first round, but eventually lost out to the Lib Dems thanks to Scotland's single transferable vote system.

COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS 23.01.25

Six seats were up for grabs on Thursday, four of which were north of the border and two of those were a double header in Edinburgh.

The Lib Dems and SNP were defending a seat each in Edinburgh, but lost to the Tories and Labour.  The Conservative vote did particularly well in this by election.  Elsewhere in Scotland, Labour lost to the SNP in Stirling, while the party did not even bother defending their Shetland seat.

South of the border it was a Lib Dem hold in Liverpool and a Labour hold in the Potteries.  The latter saw a very strong swing to Reform UK who had not previously contested the seat.

A dozen seats were up for election on Thursday, with Labour defending nine of them.  Two of those fell - both to the Lib Dems - and in both instances (Edinburgh and Oxfordshire) Labour crashed to third place.  Labour's vote share was down in all the seats it contested, except for two seats in Ayrshire.

MURRAY'S COVID CRUSADE CONTINUES

The only Labour MP in Scotland has continued his one-man crusade to expose a potential Covid-19 cover-up by the SNP government.  Ian Murray (Edinburgh South) has again written to the First Minister after she responded to his earlier claims in yesterday's Scottish press briefing.

Murray, who also Shadow Scottish Secretary, claims that a major outbreak of coronavirus stemming from a Nike conference in Edinburgh was hidden from the public.  The conference took place in February and was attended by delegates from around the world, one of whom is thought to have brought the virus to the city.  Scottish government officials are later said to have discovered that the individual tested positive when they returned to their home country, but did not inform the public.  At least 25 people linked to the conference later confirmed positive for Covid-19.

Nicola Sturgeon yesterday accepted that an 'incident management team' was set up to investigate the outbreak, but that the public were not informed as such information could potentially threaten the 'patient confidentiality' of those involved.  Murray was having none of it and quoted two pieces of legislation that he says would supercede concerns over patient confidentiality in this case.  You can read his letter in full below, click to enlarge.

Scotland will be vital to Keir Starmer if he is to stand any chance of winning the next general election.  The last time Labour won a general election, back in 2005, the party held 41 Scottish seats.  Ten years later Labour was almost wiped off the map in Scotland, holding onto just one seat - Murray's.  Labour recovered slightly in 2017, gaining six seats, but lost all six in December to the SNP.

The SNP's dominance since 2015 has overwhelmingly come at the expense of Labour, so perhaps it will not come as much of a surprise if Labour adopt a more aggressive stance towards the SNP in the years to come.  It's no coincidence that Murray is hosting a Zoom discussion tonight on how Labour can win again in Scotland.

LABOUR'S IAN MURRAY AIRBRUSHES PARTY

The incumbent for Edinburgh South is desperately fighting off another SNP resurgence.  Ian Murray has held onto the seat since 2010 and was the only Labour candidate to win a Scottish seat in 2015.  Over this period he has bucked the national trend towards the SNP and actually increased his majority at each election.  He is currently defending a healthy looking 15,514 majority, the largest majority of any MP in Scotland.  However, Labour is currently polling dreadfully across the UK, but no more so than in Scotland, a former Labour stronghold where the party is currently trailing in fourth.

Perhaps it is this woeful state of affairs that has led Murray to campaign more or less as an independent.  Although he is standing on a Labour ticket, he has airbrushed any mention of Labour from his campaign material.

Even the graph on his leaflet makes no mention of Labour, merely stating "Ian Murray" underneath a red bar.  On his website homepage there is no mention of Labour in his introduction, albeit there is a Scottish Labour logo at the top of the page.  In his posters (see below) there is no mention of Labour, although he proudly displays the logos of several organisations including various trades unions and several Remain groups including the 'Loser's Vote' and Gina Miller's Best for Britain.

One trades union that doesn't appear on Murray's campaign material is Unite.  Despite his achievements in holding the seat, last month Unite tried to have him face one of Labour's notorious trigger ballots.  However, Corbyn's Soviet footsoldiers had not sufficiently infiltrated Murray's local party in order to force him into seeking reselection.  Corbynista candidates will dominate this election campaign for Labour, but Murray has successfully withheld the purge.

He will probably fend off the SNP as well, but other Scottish Labour MPs are likely to fall to the SNP sword, whether they endorse their own party or not!

JESS'S SCOTTISH 'HOLIDAY'

Remember when Labour's Jess Phillips dumped her son on the doorstep of Number Ten?  It was such a shameless publicity stunt that some people were genuinely concerned for the child's welfare.  This week Jess has dragged her poor children along to more of her promotional stunts, albeit she appears to have told them it was a 'holiday'.  While in Edinburgh for this 'holiday' Jess managed to schedule herself for an appearance at the Edinburgh TV Festival where she spent 45 minutes chatting to fellow Brummie Joe Lycett on stage.  She also managed to find her way to a so-called 'People's Vote' event where she also spoke on stage.  Remarkably, she also got herself a live interview with Kay Burley on Sky News.  How the kids must be enjoying their family 'holiday'!

We're not sure when Jess arrived in Scotland, but two days ago she was pouring her heart out in the Times.  Once again she was using her own kin to further her self-publicity, this time her heroin addict brother.  Was he OK with this very public outing?  Did she bother to ask?

Jess Phillips is easily the most odious narcissist currently taking up the Labour whip, and that includes daft Dave Lammy.  Jess is absolutely loving herself.
