ANOTHER MAYORAL GAIN FOR LABOUR

Incumbent James Palmer (left) was defeated by Labour's Nik Johnson (right) in a
tight final round run-off

Labour have scored another surprise result, this time in the mayoral contest for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.  James Palmer had won the inaugural contest in 2017 with a fairly easy run-off against the Lib Dem candidate.  This time Palmer again won the first round, but was defeated on second preference votes in the run-off against the Labour candidate.

UKIP, the Greens, English Democrats did not contest this time, nor did independents.

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mayor (Lab GAIN from Con)

James Palmer (Con) 93,942 (40.5%) +2.5%
Nik Johnson (Lab) 76,106 (32.8%) +14.2%
Aidan Van der Weyer (LDem) 61,885 (26.7%) -3.2%

Final Round

Nik Johnson (Lab) 51.3%
James Palmer (Con) 48.7%

ELECTORAL FRAUDSTER AT LARGE (AGAIN)

A man convicted in 2008 of electoral fraud has been pictured alongside Labour activists campaigning for the local elections in Peterborough.  Tariq Mahmood received a 15 month prison term in relation to fraudulent postal votes in the city.  He was convicted alongside another Labour activist and Mohammed Chaudhary, former Labour mayor of Peterborough.

Despite the photographic evidence that emerged over the weekend, Labour has denied that Mahmood is part of their campaign team ahead of the May 6 elections.  A spokesperson told the Peterborough Telegraph: "Mr Mahmood is not a member of the Labour Party.  He does not have a role within our campaign and he is not permitted to have access to Labour Party data or technology.  We have robust systems in place to protect the integrity of the vote".  However, in the photo (see below) he is seen pointing to a piece of paper that may be a copy of the electoral roll.  None of the four men in the photo are holding bundles of leaflets, so the activity in question appears to be a canvassing session, in direct contradiction to Labour's claim of denial.

Tariq Mahmood (circled) pictured on Saturday

As for Mahmood, he told the Telegraph that he merely bumped into the activists as he was on his way to get a hair cut (despite the fact he's bald): "There were people standing there with a couple of boards and I had a picture with them.  I am 100 per cent not part of their campaign".  What is that piece of paper you're holding then Tariq?  A discount flyer for the barbers?

This is not the first time Mahmood has been seen out and about with Labour activists.  He was a prominent figure in the Peterborough by-election of 2019, which Labour narrowly won ahead of an expected gain for the Brexit Party.  Mahmood was photographed several times on Labour's campaign trail and even attended the count, but again the party denied that he was part of their campaign.

victory at the election count

The aftermath of the Peterborough by-election was marred by allegations of electoral fraud, although Cambridgeshire Constabularly later dropped their investigation citing a lack of evidence.

Mahmood was also prominent in Labour's local election campaign a couple of months earlier and posted 23 photos from the campaign trail to his Facebook page, writing: "Brilliant day out campaigning for Labour today".  The party's persistent claims that he has nothing to do with them is not simply unbelievable, it's a blatant lie.

FIONA'S CEREAL CAMPAIGN

Fiona Onasanya leaving court last year

Disgraced former Labour MP Fiona Onasanya has returned to the spotlight this week.  We haven't heard much from her since she released her awful book back in February, but she's now hit the headlines again thanks to a bizarre claim.  On Monday afternoon she addressed a tweet to the Kellogg's cereal manufacturers in which she refers to an email she sent regarding the use of certain cartoon characters in their cereals...

Even in the current climate of erasing old TV shows and tearing down statues, this is a bit of a stretch.  Onasanya predictably found herself subject to widespread ridicule as the tweet went viral and the story appeared in several national newspapers.  It was quickly pointed out to her that Kellogg's also produce a white chocolate version of Coco Pops, but the same mascot is used on the box.  Onasanya clearly hadn't done her research.

Kellogg's responded to the furore by saying it supported the black community and did not tolerate discrimination.  The spokesperson also added, possibly tongue in cheek:  "The monkey mascot that appears on both white and milk chocolate Coco Pops, was created in the 1980s to highlight the playful personality of the brand.  As part of our ambition to bring fun to the breakfast table, we have a range of characters that we show on our cereal boxes, including tigers, giraffes, crocodiles, elves and a narwhal".

Onasanya followed up her daft tweet with another two hours later in which she pointed out that Kellogg's founder (who died in 1943) was a white supremacist: "Well, given John Harvey Kellogg co-founded the Race Betterment Foundation (the Foundation's main purpose was to study the cause of and cure for 'race degeneracy'), it would be remiss of me not to ask...."

She appears to be suggesting that his company decided to honour his racist legacy with a monkey on a box 40 years later.  The mind boggles.

Earlier this month Onasanya released a YouTube video in which she expressed support for Black Lives Matter, albeit her message is somewhat more tactful than some of the provocative statements coming from the current crop of Labour MPs.  She begins her video by introducing herself as the former MP for Peterborough North.  It's not a great start seeing as there has never been a Parliamentary constituency by that name.  She was the MP for Peterborough.  She goes on to urge a peaceful campaign (admirable), but then reels off an absurd analogy about snakes in a bowl.  Onasanya appears to have an obsession with snakes, having named her book Snakes and Adders.  Aren't adders snakes?  Anyway, while the hand in the bowl analogy is well known, no-one ever suggested there were snakes in the bowl and even if there were, why would anyone put their hand in there in the first place?  Watch below, for a laugh if nothing else.

ONASANYA'S PRISON 'ORDEAL'

Disgraced former MP Fiona Onasanya has decided to cash in on her short stay at Her Majesty's pleasure.  Following her conviction for perverting the course of justice she became the first ever MP to be removed from office by way of a recall petition.  She spent 28 days of a three month sentence inside HMP Bronzefield, but has now published a book bemoaning the hardships of prison.  The book, titled Snakes & Adders, does not refer to the recall petition that saw her thrown out of Parliament or the criminal act that led to it.  However, she does liken constituents and colleagues to venomous snakes in the introduction...

"Adders are Britain's only venomous snake but in the world of politics, I think there are two types which comes disguised as what I will call constituents and comrades!!  I am referring to constituents as those people who share your ideals and support your vision but do not necessarily support you.  Neither group should be considered confidants anymore than Adders should be considered ladders!"
(Fiona Onasanya)

In a damning review of the book, the Cambridge News likened the 122-page memoir to "a child's school essay" and noted that every chapter is punctuated with multiple exclamation marks.  Onasanya recalls the finest details and one excerpt is described by the reviewer as "so boring it's practically a work of art".  The final half a dozen chapters cover her short prison stay, during which she was treated to unimaginable horrors such as a lack of dairy alternatives and having to eat "measly meals like spaghetti hoops".  Did she think it was going to be like a bed and breakfast?  Her naive expectations were mocked accordingly by one inmate who ridiculed her request for almond milk or "soya if there's no alternative".  "This ain't Costa" her fellow convict shouted across.

Asides from the lack of quality food, Onasanya complains she rarely got a decent night's sleep and was shocked to witness another inmate dancing naked in the showers.  Oh, the horror.  It should also be noted that she continued to draw an MP's salary during her prison stay, raking in around £7,000.  Her refusal to resign also cost taxpayers an estimated £500,000 according to Peterborough City Council.  This was the cost of the recall process that ultimately led to her being sacked.

In addition to her removal as an MP she was also struck off as a solicitor, but is now embarking on a new career as a motivational speaker.  Let's hope she doesn't shock her classes too much with those horrendous tales of spaghetti hoops and lack of soy!

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

The left-wing press were clearly over the moon with the Peterborough result, but the quality of the coverage differed per rag.  The Mirror couldn't hide its delight, dedicating an entire article to ridiculing Nigel Farage, while the Guardian had a more measured approach.

The Guardian article is significant because although it addresses several key factors in Labour's victory it fails to address the most glaring issue - the elephant in the room.  Yes, we know all about how Labour is a well-oiled electioneering machine, they've been at it for the best part of a century whereas the Brexit Party were at it for a few weeks.  Yes, we know all about the postal votes and how the overwhelming majority of postal votes always appear to have the Labour box ticked.  There were reportedly 6,000 postal votes in this by-election, that's almost as many votes as the Tories could muster in total.  It's a solid tactic, routinely deployed in Labour towns and cities up and down the country.  We know that.

But why does the Guardian not mention the 'M' word once in its article?  We said before this election that this ten per cent Peterborough demographic would be vital for Labour to succeed.  The Great Leader knew this only too well and exploited it to ultimate success.  The Guardian may not have mentioned it, but perhaps they didn't need to.  This was the picture they lead with...

The elephant in question usually has a beard, slaps his woman around a bit and prays five times a day.

PETERBOROUGH BY-ELECTION RESULT

Turnout was 48.4%.  Despite the collapse in its vote, Labour increased their majority to 683 (from 607 in the last general election).  This was primarily because the Tory vote collapsed significantly more than their own and the Brexit Party could not quite make up the difference.

You won't see anyone here adding up pro-Leave votes to say that Leave won.  Labour won this election.  That kind of bullshit logic is for Remain losers.

The 'ten per cent' we referred to in the Facebook post earlier is the Muslim block vote.  If people think we are overstating this they have not been paying attention.  It was vital in this election and that is why Corbyn produced this video last week.  Watch below for more proof if you're not certain that the working classes are no longer Labour's priority.

PETERBOROUGH BY-ELECTION UPDATES

02:36

Calling it a night now.  If you've enjoyed the coverage please show your appreciation with a small donation (the button on the right underneath the heading "SUPPORT US").  Thanks for following.

02:34

Spotted two almost identical slogans in the aftermath of this result.

1) Vote Tory get Corbyn (from the Brexiteers)
2) Vote Brexit get Corbyn (from the Tories)

02:29

Andrew Neil went a bit easy on Lisa Forbes there, but it's clear looking at the evidence he presented that Peterborough just elected an anti-Semite.  Very worrying times for the Jewish community in this country.  Hate to say it, but the word 'pogrom' springs to mind again.

02:25

John Curtice with some home truths for Labour.

02:23

Meanwhile, spinning the result...

02:22

Mike Greene of the Brexit Party is speaking now.  He's savvy and confident.  I wonder how Peterborough would have voted if they could have seen Forbes and Greene go head-to-head in a hustings (she bottled it).

02:17

Dreadful interview, how'd she get selected?  You'd think they'd have learned the lesson from the last disastrous candidate they selected for Peterborough

02:15

Lisa Forbes' face has gone as red as her jacket.  She's a disgrace.

02:14

Sophy Ridge is currently putting some awkward questions to the new MP about her alleged anti-Semitism.

02:09

Labour majority was just 683.

02:06

Disgusting speech by someone who will now go to Parliament and work to overturn Peterborough's Leave mandate.  Peterborough voted to Leave.

02:05

Look at how the Lab-Con votes have plummeted.

02:01

RESULT

Lisa Forbes (Labour) 10,484
Mike Greene (Brexit) 9,801
Paul Bristow (Con) 7,243
Beki Sellick (Lib Dem) 4,159
Joseph Wells (Green) 1,035
John Whitby (UKIP) 400

02:00

LABOUR HAS WON

01:57

Labour activists are very noisy off to the side of the podium.  Here's the result now.

01:56

All cameras are on the podium now.

01:54

Cracking effort for a party that is only a couple of months old, but they were up against an experienced horde of seasoned activists.

01:52

Declaration 'imminent'.  So no recount then.

01:50

Grimesy tweets.  Top bloke Grimesy.

01:48

If Farage has really left the building then it's pretty obvious what the result will be.

01:46

Presumably a 'provisional' result could lead to a recount.  Would be nice to get some sleep at some point.

01:44

'Provisional' result imminent!

01:43

Not good.

01:40

Declaration in around half an hour.  Some votes are currently being recounted.  Brace yourselves for disappointment.

01:37

You simply can't underestimate the power of the Muslim block vote.  I was told years ago that "even dead Muslims vote".  Yes, and they vote Labour.

01:35

If we don't leave the EU in October, the Brexit Party could potentially take Labour seats in the north of England.  Maybe even the Midlands and Wales too.  A Labour/SNP government is not set in stone.

01:29

Corbynistas are cock-a-hoop on Twitter.  Not good.

01:28

Sky News reports that 'sources' in the Brexit Party have told them that Labour has won by around 500 votes.

01:27

Little Owen has also tweeted that Labour has won.  Not good.

01:25

Aaron Bastani, the really dull Marxist commentator, has confidently announced on Twitter that Labour has won.

01:24

Not good.

01:19

It's all very tense right now, but worryingly no-one is suggesting that the Brexit Party has it.  Most people are saying "too close to call" while others are calling it narrowly for Labour.  Not good.

01:16

The Lib Dems reckon they've beat the Tories into fourth.  Embarrassing.

01:11

Despite reports to the contrary, the Brexit Party candidate Mike Greene is now inside the count.  But no Farage.  Not good.

01:10

Let's hope this is not a winning candidate.

01:09

The narrative in the last half hour certainly seems to be swinging towards Labour.  Not good.

01:07

Labour's horrendous candidate has arrived.  Is she draped in a Palestinian flag?

01:06

Still no sign of Farage.  Not good.

01:04

The panel currently appearing on This Week all agree that the election is too close to call, except for Lib Dem Tom Brake.  His sources suggest Labour have nicked it.

01:00

'Tis confusion.  A recount?  Must be close if they're talking about that dreadful word.

00:59

Little Owen has tweeted 'praying hands' emojis.  Good sign.

00:55

Can't Farage's driver find a parking space?  Or is he just circling the count until there's some indication of which way it's going.

00:50

Katie says heads are down in the Brexit Party.  Not good.

00:49

That daft new poll in full.  Change UK on zero per cent.  Can't recall ever seeing zero per cent in a poll.

00:47

Brexit Party candidate Mike Greene has reportedly just arrived outside the count.  Will Farage be with him?

00:45

Jess Phillips asks why there is a metal detector at the count.  Well, with 10% of Peterborough's population from your beloved 'religion of peace', can't think why Jess.

00:43

Jeremy looked as comfortable as ever commemorating our fallen yesterday.

00:40

Andrew Neil:  "The Mayor of London appears to matter more to the President than he does to most Londoners".  Class.

00:39

We are awash with polls at the moment.  The reality is that come a general election most people would flock back to the Lab-Con parties to cancel the other one out.  We are still in a two-party system and the only way that will change is if we don't leave the EU this year.

00:33

'Rumours'.  Pay no heed.

00:30

Katie Hopkins (off the Apprentice) tells the Cambridge News why she is at the count:

"I’ve watched Peterborough really closely.  I love that the people of Peterborough went out to vote to get rid of Fiona Onasanya because they cared enough.

“So not only did they go out to vote to get an MP, they then went out and voted to get rid of an MP, because I feel that Peterborough has a sense of British justice and what’s right and wrong, and it’s not right to be in Parliament voting with an ankle tag on.

“I love that the people of Peterborough did that.  Then there’s the momentum behind this, the idea that the Brexit Party might have their first MP.

“There’s a very strange thing going on in the town centre.  All of the momentum, all of the noise is Brexit party.  The noise and the media bubble is Brexit Party.

“But behind the performance on the stage, the machinery and mechanics of the vote goes to Labour.  I’ve seen them today and their machine is powerful.”

00:26

No sign of Farage yet.  Not good.

00:25

00:24

BBC reporter for This Week says he is getting 'mixed messages' from Labour and the Brexit Party on how the count is proceeding.

00:22

If Labour win it won't change the mathematics in the Commons, it will be Remainer for Remainer.  That's why it's imperative that the Brexit Party wins this.  Remember that Fiona Onasanya won the day by one vote in the last Brexit blocking bill.

00:20

Not good.

00:14

Stella Creasy just listed "all" the Brexit options on This Week.  They were: General election or second referendum.  That's how remoaners see it.

00:09

The votes are now being allocated per candidate.  We will start to get an idea soon which way the seat is headed.

00:08

Piers Morgan is being very cocky about his Question Time appearance, bragging all over Twitter.

00:07

It's all gone quiet.

23:59

Facebook page is close to 77k likes.  Was only saying to t'other half a few days ago that we'd passed 76k.  Thanks a lot for your support.

23:57

Wow, this very disturbing video just popped up in our Twitter feed.

23:55

Michael Portillo (on This Week) is spot on.  The Brexit Party would take votes from Labour as well as the Tories in a general election, but only if Brexit doesn't happen.  If we leave in October the Brexit Party will nosedive as did UKIP after June 2016.

23:51

This is how Peterborough voted in the Euro elections, but the boundaries are different for Parliamentary elections.

Brexit: 38.3%
Lab: 17.2%
Lib Dem: 15.4%
Con: 10.9%
Green: 10.8%
UKIP: 3.6%

23:48

This is good.  Nigel Farage expected to attend shortly.  He wouldn't be there if his party didn't have a shout.

23:44

A rather high turnout for Peterborough at 48.4 per cent.  There was also a 69.4 per cent turnout for postal votes.

This is not good.  Labour have a well-oiled canvassing machine and will have got their vote out, plus we know where at least 95% of those postal votes are going...

23:42

Just to confirm, we'll keep going until there is a result.  Unless there's a recount.

23:38

Still don't know why Katie Hopkins is at the count, but she reckons the result will come around 2am.

23:35

Piers Morgan is nailing it tonight.

23:33

Kate Hoey continues to shine in a cesspit of Labour filth.

23:32

Not good.

23:30

Better late than never!

23:29

Question Time-related tweet.  Spot on.

23:27

A reporter has just said that the result may not come in until 3am at the earliest.  In the European elections the Peterborough result was already announced by now.  Turnout must be very high.

23:21

All five panelists on Question Time tonight backed Remain in the referendum, although Piers Morgan is very vocal about respecting the vote.

23:16

All the ballot boxes have now arrived at the count.  That took some time didn't it?  Polls closed over an hour ago!

23:12

Brexit Party all over the count, other parties short of counting agents?

23:10

From the Cambridge News:

Peterborough North votes are being counted as are Bretton, Paston & Walton and the Peterborough West votes.

Rumours are starting to circulate about how the vote will swing.

So far I’ve heard rumours that the Brexit Party may win by several votes, but could also lose to Labour.

There’s a real air of uncertainty here as people try to predict the outcome of this momentous by-election.
23:07

Katie Hopkins off the Apprentice is wandering around the count.  Not sure why.

23:05

Better.

23:04

Yep.

22:57

Not good.

22:55

Going to be close?  Sounds ominous.

22:53

He's gone now, why is this muppet still wittering on?

22:49

All together - who are ya?

22:46

PETERBOROUGH RUNNERS AND RIDERS

Of the fifteen candidates standing in today's by-election there are six Brexiteers, six Remainers and three undeclared/neutral candidates.  In the 2016 referendum the constituency returned a 61% Leave vote.  In the last Parliamentary election there were just four candidates and, as we know, the seat was won by Labour's Fiona Onasanya.

2017 General Election

Fiona Onasanya (Lab) 22,950
Stewart Jackson (Con) 22,343
Beki Sellick (Lib Dem) 1,597
Fiona Radic (Green) 848

The Brexit Party hammered Labour in the Euro elections, but it's important to note that the council boundaries are not the same as the Parliamentary boundaries, so this result is not as indicative as it might seem, plus voters do not necessarily vote the same way in Parliamentary elections.

2019 European Election

Brexit Party - 16,196
Labour - 7,272
Lib Dem - 6,491
Conservative - 4,594
Green - 4,563
UKIP - 1,537

Here's a full run-down on the by-election candidates, starting with the bookies favourite.

Mike Greene (Brexit Party)
Leave candidate, 1-8 odds on.  From Peterborough.

Lisa Forbes (Labour)
Remain candidate, 5-1.  From Peterborough.

Beki Sellick (Lib Dem)
Remain candidate, 25-1.  From Peterborough.

Paul Bristow (Conservative)
Leave candidate, 40-1.  From Peterborough.

Joseph Wells (Green)
Remain candidate, 200-1.  From Peterborough.

John Whitby (UKIP)
Leave candidate, 500-1.  From Peterborough.

Patrick O'Flynn (SDP)
Leave candidate, 500-1.  From London.

Peter Ward (Renew)

Tom Rogers (Christian People's Alliance)
No Brexit position, 500-1.  From Peterborough.

Andrew Moore (Independent)
Leave candidate, 500-1.  From Peterborough.

Bobby Smith (Independent)
No Brexit position, 500-1.  From Stevenage.

Stephen Goldspink (English Democrats)
Leave candidate, 1000-1.  From Peterborough.

Alan 'Howling Laud' Hope (Monster Raving Loony)
No Brexit position, 1000-1.  From Hampshire.

Odds sourced from Skybet.

LAB-CON CANDIDATES REFUSE SKY

Both Labour and Conservative candidates refused to speak to Sky News today ahead of tomorrow's vital Parliamentary by-election in Peterborough.  Labour candidate Lisa Forbes was probably hoping to avoid awkward questions about her questionable social media activity, but what's the Tory excuse?  Have they both conceded to the Brexit Party already?

GALLOWAY BATS FOR BREXIT PARTY

Just as Little Owen is the unofficial mouthpiece of Jeremy Corbyn, a rather surprising backer has emerged on behalf of Nigel Farage.  Left-wing Brexiteer George Galloway announced he was voting for Farage's party "one-time only" in the Euro elections, but since then he has positioned himself as a pro-Brexit Party correspondent.  He is also thought to have sought the Brexit Party nomination for the Peterborough by-election (one week today), having previously considered running as a pro-Leave independent.

In the video below George passionately rallies for Farage and the Brexit Party and goes on to discuss a number of political developments.  Please note he is mistaken in describing Peterborough as the 'most pro-Brexit town' in the country.  Although a 61% Leave-voting constituency this doesn't even place it in the top 100 pro-Brexit constituencies.  Sorry George.

As we've stated before, in order to 'get the job done' and force the politicians to implement the Leave mandate we will have to hold our noses and join forces with those with whom we would not normally associate.  After-all, despite what the Remainers say, the 52% are not all elderly right-wing 'gammon'.

JEZZA PUTS MUSLIMS FIRST

Peterborough goes to the polls (again) in less than two weeks.  The June 6 by-election to replace the disgraced Fiona Onasanya will see 15 candidates fight it out for a seat that has historically flip-flopped between Labour and the Tories.  This morning the Great Leader posted a campaign video to his Facebook page which tells you everything you need to know about Labour and its priorities.  The first place he visits is the mosque...

Peterborough has a high Muslim population, but it is still less than 10 per cent.  In almost every shot Jeremy is surrounded by Muslims, suggesting that the only people that matter in this city are Muslims.  We've said it before and we'll say it again - Labour has ditched the working classes in favour of a new demographic.  If you don't believe us, watch the video again.

PETERBOROUGH CANDIDATES REVEALED

A whopping FIFTEEN candidates have been nominated for the forthcoming Parliamentary by-election in Peterborough.  The 61% Leave voting constituency has attracted a large field of Leave candidates, but the big news has been on the Remain side.

Four Remain parties were to stand aside and back a single independent Remain candidate - Femi Oluwole - but he backed out at the last minute.  Femi is a familiar face to TV audiences, but is not the brightest spark and was last seen in this embarrassing performance on Good Morning Britain.  Anna Soubry claims he was 'leaned on' by the Labour party and he pulled out just two hours before the deadline.  Strangely, the other three parties all managed to get their nomination papers in after Femi withdrew, but not Change UK.  Funny that, it's almost as if Soubry's party is afraid of elections!

The candidates are as follows.

Brexit Party - Mike Greene
Christian People's Alliance - Tom Rogers
Common Good: Remain in the EU - Dick Rodgers
Conservatives - Paul Bristow
English Democrats - Stephen Goldspink
Green Party - Joseph Wells
Independent - John Moore
Independent - Bobby Smith
Labour - Lisa Forbes
Liberal Democrats - Beki Sellick
Official Monster Raving Loony Party - Alan 'Howling Laud' Hope
Renew - Peter Ward
SDP Fighting for Brexit - Patrick O'Flynn
UK European Union Party - Pierre Kirk
UKIP - John Whitby

The seat was narrowly taken from the Conservatives at the last election, when there were just four candidates.  Quite how the array of Leave/Remain candidates will affect the by-election result is anyone's guess.

ONASANYA CONCEDES

Although Fiona was sacked on Wednesday, there was nothing to stop her from seeking re-election in the forthcoming by-election.  Given her extraordinary conduct over the last few months no-one could be certain as to what she might do next.  As it happens, she has finally conceded that her brief career in Parliament is finally over...

PETERBOROUGH BY-ELECTION

The by-election to replace the disgraced Fiona Onasanya will take place five weeks from today, on June 6th.  A number of candidates have already been announced, as follows.

Labour - Lisa Forbes
Conservative - Paul Bristow
Lib Dem - Beki Sellick
Green - Fiona Radic
UKIP - John Whitby
SDP - Patrick O'Flynn
Monster Raving Loon - Alan Howling Lord Hope

The Brexit Party have confirmed it will also be standing, as will leftie Brexiteer George Galloway (on an independent ticket).  The Tory candidate is also a Brexiteer, as is the SDP candidate, so it appears that there are a whole host of candidates looking to capitalise on Peterborough's 61% Leave vote.  The danger here is that it will split the vote horribly for the Conservatives and deliver the seat back to Labour.

The previous two elections have been extremely close and the seat has regularly changed hands between Labour and Conservative for the past 45 years.  The Tories have held it for the majority of that time.

ONASANYA IS SACKED

A minimum of 6,967 signatures were required for this petition to be successful (or 10% of Peterborough's electorate).  A whopping 19,261 signed, almost three times the amount required!  This means Fiona Onasanya is the first MP in history to be sacked as a result of a recall petition.

A very interesting Parliamentary by-election will now be scheduled.  Peterborough returned a 61% Leave vote in 2016 and the Brexit Party has already announced it will be contesting the seat, as will UKIP.  Last time it was very close, with only four candidates standing and just 607 votes in it...
