This was a vital week for Yvette Cooper and Keir Starmer, coming after their big announcement that the 'first detentions' had taken place the previous week. If they had wanted to show that their 'one in, one out' policy was going to deter crossings, it was a disastrous start. Crossings have more than doubled in the past week and 2025 remains on course to present the new all time record for boat migrants.
What's more, there have been zero updates on detentions since the initial announcement - which was vague in itself, with no numbers provided. So we do not know if any of the 2,406 newcomers brought in by Border Farce/RNLI since the announcement have been detained. It also remains to be seen as to if and when any will be returned to France and exchanged. We were told that it could take several weeks, but thousands more will have arrived by then.
The world is laughing at us...
Total = 1,723 (up 885 from previous week)
