SOUR-FACED SOUBRY


While most Labour MPs remain tight-lipped about the Brexit deal, there are countless more Remainers who are less reticent about sharing their bitter feelings.  Lord Adonis, Alastair Campbell and Anna Soubry were among the disgruntled mob on Twitter, having secretly hoped for the no deal scenario they said would be the most disastrous outcome.  Now they and their ilk are scratching around for every possible negative aspect of the Brexit deal that is, whether any of us like it or not, the reality of things to come.

Soubry's colleagues in the short-lived disaster that was Change UK are mostly quiet, having moved on to pastures new or retired.  Unlike Chuka, Heidi Allen and co, Soubry is clearly incapable of letting go and continues to lash out at her old party and the process of delivering the Leave mandate.




Like the daft situation in which the SNP will vote against the deal on Wednesday, Soubry simultaneously derides no deal while supporting anyone who opposes the actual deal.  So while they all insist that no deal is the worst of all scenarios, they want to block the deal on the table and therefore leave without a deal.  The mind boggles.  Still, on the bright side, at least sour-faced Anna is one of those people who is happily promoting the wearing of a face muzzle.

PS. Anna's constituency voted Leave in 2016 and three years later voted to get rid of her too.  Her bitterness is not difficult to understand.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CHANGE UK?

One year ago today a group of eleven MPs formed Change UK, a party whose primary objective was to overturn the EU referendum.  Despite leaving the parties for whom they were elected, all refused to fight by-elections under their new banner.  The party was crushed in the European elections and was dissolved following the general election, at which none were re-elected to Parliament.

So, who faced the electorate and who bottled it?

Chris Leslie 

 Leslie was the Labour MP for Nottingham East from 1997, a 57% Remain seat.  He defended the seat and finished fourth, losing his deposit.

Chuka Umunna

Wollaston was the Conservative MP for Totnes from 2010, a 54% Leave seat.  She left Change UK in June and joined the Lib Dems in August.  She defended her seat as a Lib Dem, but lost.

THE TOP 20 CHICKENS

Following Labour's u-turn, the government's general election bill was passed in the Commons by a whopping 418 majority.  It still has to pass through the House of Lords, but is likely to gain royal assent by the end of the week.  Predictably it won't move as swiftly as the Benn Surrender Act did.  Nothing moves that fast!

Embarrassingly for Corbyn almost half of his own MPs refused to back his newfound enthusiasm for a general election. 104 abstained in the final vote, while a further 11 voted against, making a complete mockery of Corbyn's triumphant announcement earlier in the day that his party was "totally united".

There were 20 MPs in total who opposed the final reading of the bill, many of whom clearly desperate to cling on to the Westminster gravy train for as long as possible.  More than half of them were Labour, including the most despicable parasites of all ie. those who are standing down anyway at the next election, but who wanted to stay on and milk the system just that little bit longer.  They are all unapologetic Remainers, so some of them will be fearing the election of a pro-Leave Parliament.  We've put our suggestions for their main motives in italics.  Obviously there's no doubting the motives for Change UK...

Ann Clwyd (Cynon Valley) - standing down, wanted to ride the train a bit longer

CHUKA CHOPS AND CHANGES (AGAIN)

Chuka Umunna will now enter the Commons under a third party name this year (it's still only June).


This is an act of self-preservation for Chuka.  Change UK was a trainwreck and it was quite obvious that he had zero chance of re-election under that banner.  He is now pinning his hopes on an amber rosette continuing his Parliamentary career, but it's still a long shot.  Although the Lib Dems topped the poll in Lambeth in the recent Euro elections, such votes rarely translate into a Parliamentary election - as we saw last week in Peterborough.  All three MPs in Lambeth (Chuka in Streatham, Kate Hoey in Vauxhall and Helen Hayes in Dulwich) have huge majorities.  They were all elected for Labour.  In Chuka's seat the Lib Dems actually came third in the last general election, miles behind the Tories let alone Labour.

It's difficult to see how Chuka could cling on to this seat, even with a huge swing to the Lib Dems.  Labour would make this eminently more implausible by selecting an openly Remain candidate to fight him.  They'd be daft not to in this Remain heartland.  Furthermore, how can his constituents trust a man who has changed his party twice since being re-elected in 2017 and hasn't entrusted them once with a by-election.

The only rosette that could keep Chuka on the Westminster gravy train is a red one, but perhaps this would be a change too far even for Chuka - as if Corbyn would have the turncoat Zionist Blairite traitor back in the first place.

MORE BY-ELECTIONS PLEASE

Given the near fatal blow suffered by 'Change UK' today, this is a timely petition.  Six of those MPs have now resigned from two different parties this year and not a single by-election has been fought and won.  When Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless defected from the Tories to UKIP in 2014 they both instigated by-elections.  As they both won those by-elections they spent the rest of that Parliamentary term legitimately elected as UKIP MPs.  So come on Soubry and co - what are you afraid of?

CHANGE UK SPLITS

'Change UK' met today and its eleven MPs have decided to part ways.  This follows its European election disaster in which it spent shedloads of cash and finished eighth with not a single seat to show for its efforts.  The split itself was thought to have been triggered by a public spat between Anna Soubry and Change leader Heidi Allen.

Soubry will now take Heidi's place as leader while four of her colleagues stay put - Ann Coffey, Mike Gapes, Chris Leslie and Joan Ryan.

Those who have quit Change UK will return to being just plain old independents - Chuka, Heidi, Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith and Sarah Wollaston.

X+Y+Z=REMAIN WON!

Mayhar Tousi provides some excellent analysis of the European election results and the 'fact' Remain won.  Hilarious.


The graph that Mahyar alluded to in his video can be found below.  As you can see, 'Change UK' spent more than £200,000 on Facebook ads in the four weeks prior to the election.  A lot of money for a party that not only failed to win a seat, but did so badly that it polled less votes than the SNP, a party that only stood in one region.  Conversely, the Brexit Party spent less than half that amount and won the election (sorry, remoaners, but they did).  Poor Chuka and co.  Rest in peace 'Change UK'.

The first region to declare is expected to be North East England, as early as 22:15 depending on turnout and an orderly count.  The region is currently represented by two Labour MEPs and one Brexit Party.  If Labour loses one of its seats to the Brexit Party this could suggest a nationwide landslide will follow.

Yorkshire and South West England are likely to be the second and third declarations, any time after 23:00.  The remaining regions will hopefully declare by 03:00, with the exception of Scotland (declaring mid morning on Monday) and Northern Ireland (declaring on Tuesday).
