LABOUR'S WITHDRAWAL 19

Boris Johnson enjoyed a rare victory on Tuesday as nineteen Labour rebels helped him to a majority of 30 on the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

This was the vote where we finally uncovered those Labour MPs who had postured about supporting Brexit, but had yet to deliver.  They finally defied the whips and the hard left threats of McDonnell and Lansman.  The nineteen were as follows.

There were some surprises here, in particular the names of Mike Hill, Jo Platt and Lisa Nandy.  There were also some notable absences.  Despite flirting with the notion of a Brexit deal for months now, Stevie Kinnock backed out and voted against the bill.  Two-faced Lucy Powell also voted against the bill, while Justin Madders and Yvonne Fovargue abstained.  Hardcore Brexiteer Kate Hoey also abstained from the vote, but she never backed May's deal either and she is less likely to back Johnson's deal given her Protestant Northern Ireland background.  It's complicated.

Sadly, most of the 19 Labour rebels reverted back to form and voted down the timetable for the bill they had just voted for.  It won't spare them awful abuse from Remainers on social media though.  Only Barron, Fitzpatrick, Flint and Mann backed up their initial vote, with Kate Hoey providing the fifth Labour vote.

The PM has now put the bill on hold, for motives unknown, a decision that led Donald Tusk to announce his intention to extend Article 50 (collective groan).  Even die hard supporters of Boris Johnson are now beginning to ask serious questions about his apparent lack of countermeasures and the now strongly suspected absence of a masterplan that would have got us out next week.  A general election between now and the next Brexit deadline of January 31st is now inevitable.  The problem for Boris is that he is going into this election having failed to deliver Brexit and as such the Brexit Party will still be in play.  He simply has to swallow his pride (if he has any left) and cut a deal with Nigel Farage.  The Brexit Party can take out Labour MPs in the north of England, but it can only do so if the Tories stand aside.  The Brexit Party can then stand down elsewhere, in order to allow the Tories a free run in Labour marginals, particularly in the south of England.  It's a no brainer, but having seen the debacle of the last few weeks, we have to ask if there are any brains on either side of the Commons.

THE LABOUR SIX

It's not clear at the moment what the next step will be.  Will the dreaded letter be sent and if not, what then?  What is clear is that despite various MPs arguing that this amendment is not about frustrating Brexit, one only has to look at the reaction of Remainers to it.

Credit where it is due there were six Labour MPs who opposed this amendment.  They were:

Kevin Barron
Ronnie Campbell
Jim Fitzpatrick
Caroline Flint
Kate Hoey
John Mann

Former Labour MPs Ian Austin, Frank Field, Ivan Lewis and John Woodcock also opposed the amendment as did the currently suspended Kelvin Hopkins.

Four Labour MPs abstained, as follows:

Sarah Champion
Rosie Cooper
Melanie Onn
Derek Twigg

ODDS SHORTENING ON BREXIT DEAL

The bookies now have Boris Johnson's revised withdrawal agreement passing tomorrow as 'odds on'.  Ladbrokes and Coral have the ayes at 8/11, while Betfred and Paddy Power have 4/6.  There's clearly not much in it as the same bookies have the deal failing at evens (Ladbrokes/Coral), 11/10 (Paddy Power) and 6/5 (Betfred).  However, all major bookmakers report that odds of the deal passing are shortening and odds of it failing are drifting, albeit it's worth noting that this doesn't take into account potentially fatal amendments that would pave the way for another Brexit delay.

The shortening of odds may have something to do with the tiny trickle of Labour MPs voicing their support for the deal throughout the afternoon and into this evening.  With the DUP and every opposition party opposed to the deal, Boris will need as many Labour rebels as possible to get his deal through.  Labour MPs who have either indicated or are expected to vote in favour of the agreement are as follows:

Ronnie Campbell
Sarah Champion (expected)
Jim Fitzpatrick (expected)
Caroline Flint (expected)
John Mann
Melanie Onn

Others who are keeping their cards close to their chest include Kevin Barron, Gloria De Piero, Stevie Kinnock, Stephanie Peacock, Ruth Smeeth, Gareth Snell and Graham Stringer.

Several independents are also undeclared, but it's highly likely that Ian Austin, Frank Field and Kelvin Hopkins will back the government.

Every single one of these MPs have faced the full keyboard tapping fury of anti-Brexit Labour activists and Remainers at large.  The bile and hate that has spewed forth will hopefully toughen their resolve, but we don't have long to wait now.  One thing is for sure - if biased Bercow and his Remain Alliance have anything to do with it, proceedings will be far from simple.

THE LABOUR 19

Nineteen Labour MPs have written to the EU imploring that they come to an agreement with our government as "the British people have become exasperated with Parliamentary deadlock".  Well, they're not wrong there!  The letter, addressed to Jean-Claude Juncker (and a copy also sent to Donald Tusk), can be seen below.  Click to enlarge.

The letter has been denounced by Labour Remainers who are furious that Labour MPs - elected on a manifesto that stated that "Labour accepts the referendum result" - should have the barefaced cheek and audacity to uphold said result and party manifesto!  "What planet are you all on" blasts
@annikahjelmskog"Gobsmacked and very scared this is coming from Labour MPs elected on a Corbyn manifesto" moans @linda_whyman, apparently oblivious to the actual manifesto they were elected on.  "You don't speak for me or most Labour supporters" says @fliss59, obviously forgetting that an overwhelming number of Labour constituencies voted Leave.

The nineteen MPs who signed the above letter are as follows, including constituency and Leave/Remain vote.

Kevin Barron (Rother Valley) 67% Leave
Sarah Champion (Rotherham) 68% Leave
Rosie Cooper (West Lancashire) 55% Leave
Jon Cruddas (Dagenham & Rainham) 70% Leave
Gloria De Piero (Ashfield) 70% Leave
Jim Fitzpatrick (Poplar & Limehouse) 66% Remain
Caroline Flint (Don Valley) 68% Leave
Yvonne Fovargue (Makerfield) 65% Leave
Dan Jarvis (Barnsley Central) 68% Leave
Stephen Kinnock (Aberavon) 60% Leave
Emma Lewell-Buck (South Shields) 62% Leave
Justin Madders (Ellesmere Port & Neston) 58% Leave
Grahame Morris (Easington) 66% Leave
Melanie Onn (Great Grimsby) 71% Leave
Stephanie Peacock (Barnsley East) 71% Leave
Lucy Powell (Manchester Central) 64% Remain
Ruth Smeeth (Stoke-on-Trent North) 72% Leave

THE LABOUR 26

26 Labour MPs wrote to Corbyn today imploring him not to back a second referendum.  The letter (see below, click to enlarge) warns of the potential threat to Labour in Leave-voting seats, primarily from the Brexit Party.  The MPs explicitly state that "Brexit must happen.  The UK must leave..."

There are only two Brexiteers among the signatures (Mann, Skinner), the overwhelming majority being Remainers who are trying desperately to save their own Parliamentary skins.  How else to explain the presence of Stephen Kinnock, a man whose family made millions from being at the heart of the EU beast?  Having just seen the Brexit Party come from nowhere to almost snatch Peterborough, Stevie is clearly worried that the Brexit heartlands in south Wales are under threat from this new phenomenon.  Furthermore, he hasn't got thousands of Muslim postal votes to back him up either.

The only MP representing a Remain seat on the list is Jim Fitzpatrick, an MP who backed May's deal at the third time of asking.  Dan 'Two Jobs' Jarvis is also on the list, surely the gravy train robber is not looking to stand again at the next election?  Nothing would surprise in the shameless world of Westminster.

This is the full list of signatories, complete with their constituency referendum votes.

Kevin Barron (Rother Valley - 67% Leave)
Sarah Champion (Rotherham - 68% Leave)
Julie Cooper (Burnley - 67% Leave)
Rosie Cooper (West Lancs - 55% Leave)
Jon Cruddas (Dagenham & Rainham - 70% Leave)
Gloria De Piero (Ashfield - 70% Leave)
Jim Fitzpatrick (Poplar & Limehouse - 66% Remain)
Caroline Flint (Don Valley - 68% Leave)
Yvonne Fovargue (Makerfield - 65% Leave)
Mary Glindon (North Tyneside - 60% Leave)
Mike Hill (Hartlepool - 70% Leave)
Dan Jarvis (Barnsley Central - 68% Leave)
Stephen Kinnock (Aberavon - 60% Leave)
Emma Lewell-Buck (South Shields - 62% Leave)
Justin Madders (Ellesmere Port & Neston - 58% Leave)
John Mann (Bassetlaw - 68% Leave)
Jim McMahon (Oldham West & Royton - 61% Leave)
Grahame Morris (Easington - 66% Leave)
Lisa Nandy (Wigan - 63% Leave)

BREXIT BLOCKERS DEFEATED

The first attempt by Remainer MPs to stop Brexit from happening in October failed this evening.  The motion, supported by Labour, the SNP, Lib Dems, Plaid and Green MP Caroline Lucas, was defeated by 11 votes.

As the Tories cheered the result an angry Corbyn shouted across the chamber "You won't be cheering in September".  Quite what he meant by that is anyone's guess.  Perhaps he meant to say October, that would have made more sense.

Eight Labour MPs voted against the motion, crucially 17 abstained.  Several opponents of a second referendum were among the abstentions including Ruth Smeeth, Melanie Onn and Gareth Snell.  However, despite all her recent bluster, Lisa Nandy supported the motion.  Note to people of Wigan - remember this.

Ian Blackford was furious about Labour's rebels and abstentions, directly blaming them for the motion's defeat in a furious tweet.  "Unforgivable" he chuntered.  Thankfully all ten DUP members were present and duly voted against the motion.

The eight Labour rebels who opposed Labour's motion were:

Kevin Barron
Ronnie Campbell
Jim Fitzpatrick
Caroline Flint
Stephen Hepburn
Kate Hoey
John Mann
Graham Stringer

On the Tory benches there were ten rebels that supported Labour's motion.  All but three represent Leave-voting constituencies:

Guto Bebb - constituency voted Leave 52%
Ken Clarke
Jonathan Djanogly - constituency voted Leave 53%
Justine Greening
Dominic Grieve
Sam Gyimah - constituency voted Leave 54%
Phillip Lee - constituency voted Leave 53%
Oliver Letwin - constituency voted Leave 51%
Antoinette Sandbach - constituency voted Leave 52%
Caroline Spelman - constituency voted Leave 59%

Make no mistake, this won't be their last attempt to stop us leaving in October.  They will be back again soon with more of the same and the Speaker will be only too happy to oblige them...

THE LABOUR EIGHT

MPs have voted to 'take control' of Brexit, a worrying development indeed when considering most of them want to stop it.  Only eight Labour MPs voted with the government on the latest amendment.  It was largely a case of the usual suspects;

Kevin Barron
Ronnie Campbell
Rosie Cooper
Caroline Flint
Stephen Hepburn
Kate Hoey
John Mann
Graham Stringer

Rosie Cooper hasn't been particularly supportive of Brexit in the past, but she did reject the second referendum amendment earlier this month.  It's highly unlikely we'll see many more Labour MPs suddenly find a conscience, but we live in hope.  The independents that voted with the government included former Labour MPs Frank Field and Ian Austin.

If you want an indication of how bad this vote was for Brexit, look no further than the reaction from leading EU federalist nutcase Guy Verhoftwat...

LABOUR THREESOME

Just three Labour MPs backed May's withdrawal deal in the vote tonight.  Caroline Flint switched her vote from opposition to support, while Kevin Barron and John Mann maintained their support from the first vote.  Former Labour MPs Frank Field and Ian Austin also supported the deal.

Disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya made the trip to Parliament to vote against May's deal.
