Unfortunately, Starmer wasn't at Saturday's game

On Saturday night around 7,000 England away fans took up a couple of chants that summed up the general mood of the nation.  To the tune of 'Give it Up' by KC and the Sunshine Band, they sang "Na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na-na-na now, Starmer is a c***, is a c***, Starmer is a c***."  They are also reported to have chanted "Keir Starmer is a wanker, is a wanker."

The fans had travelled to Barcelona, but were subjected to one of the most dire performances in living memory as their team struggled to beat that 'mighty' football nation of Andorra - population less than Weston-super-Mare.  Perhaps it was a sign of their frustration beyond the footy, that inspired them to strike up the chant.  Despite ITV's attempts to phase out the chants, they were audible enough to make headlines.

On Sunday morning, Trevor Phillips of Sky News put it to Labour minister Peter Kyle that the obscene chants displayed a 'level of unpopularity' that was perhaps 'a little early' in Labour's term.  Hove MP Kyle tried to laugh off the question by inferring that the England team do not concern him, as he only watches Brighton and Hove Albion.  Not a good response, if you are on a national station trying to win over the nation.

Kyle's floundering response didn't get any better as he added:  "This is football chanting, is it not the spirit of the game?"  Phillips pointed to the England manager's assessment of the chanting, who said it had been 'unacceptable'.  Kyle then embarked on the usual 'we've had to take difficult decisions' line, because Labour inherited such a mess from the terrible Tories.

No, Peter, England fans won't be chanting 'nice things about' Labour next time around.  They won't forget in a hurry that all their bills continue to rise, their disposable income shrinks, crime continues to spiral and the invasion by small boats grows.  These are the consequences of decisions that you say you 'had to make', but which you had previously pledged not to make.

In short, you lied in order to get into office.
