Seven seats are up for grabs on Thursday, with Labour on the defence in the north Yorkshire borough of Redcar and Cleveland. No-one has come close to unseating Labour in this ward previously, but the Reform juggernaut is new in town and a gain is likely for them.
Labour are also technically on the defence in Macclesfield, where the disgraced incumbent was elected on their ticket in 2019. Cllr Ashley Farrall was suspended by the party last year after being charged with assaulting his partner. He was cleared of the charge, but later convicted of perverting the course of justice and is now serving a twelve month sentence. Despite the circumstances, this would still be an impressive gain for any party, as Labour had a huge majority here. The Green Party finished a distant second last time around and they could benefit from a swing away from Labour both to themselves and Reform.
The real free-for-all is just north of the border, where a genuine independent has left the field wide open. The other councillors for this ward are two Conservatives and one SNP. The SNP will probably be favourites as the Tories could haemorrhage votes to the newcomers Reform.
