Before we get to next week's impressive nine by-elections, we continue the quiet period with just a brace of vacancies this week. Both seats were being defended by Labour in prime leftist territory, which is why this week's glory went to the Greens and not Reform.
Having previously stood a joint candidate with Plaid in the Cardiff seat, the Greens went it alone this time and soared past Labour into first place. In Newcastle-upon-Tyne the usual challengers in the seat were the Lib Dems and they would have fancied their chances here. However, it was the Greens who took full advantage of Labour's slump as they and the Lib Dems pushed Labour into a humiliating third place with less than half the vote.
In both seats the Labour vote share plunged by around 25 per cent.
