SALMOND THROWS IN THE TOWEL

Alex Salmond has conceded that his Alba vanity project may end up with no MSPs.  Despite a recent opinion poll suggesting the party may scrape one regional seat at Holyrood, it could yet come to pass that Alba's only achievement in this election is stopping the SNP from forming a majority.  This would be a bitter sweet result for Salmond, whose epic fall out with Nicola Sturgeon has dominated the headlines this year.  The question is: Does Alex value his own ego more than Scottish independence?

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON SATURDAY?

Most of the remaining results are expected to be declared on Saturday.  By tonight we should have a full picture for Scotland and Wales, although some of the bigger mayoral elections could take longer.  The London mayoral result is not expected to be declared any earlier than tonight.

While Labour have been thumped in England, they have faired much better in Wales.  They have won 30 seats so far and are unlikely to pick up any more.  This is one short of a majority, but they have managed to avoid having to go into a coalition with Plaid Cymru.  In the last Senedd election they relied on the solitary Lib Dem MS to prop them up.  The Lib Dems were not expected to win any seats this time, but they picked up a seat overnight in the regional PR list.

For Wales constituency votes please click here.

In Scotland things are potentially even more depressing with the separatists likely to get a majority, even if it means an SNP-Green coalition.  Both parties favour independence.  There is plenty of evidence that Unionist voters have been voting wisely in order to stop the SNP - by voting for the best-placed Unionist party - but sadly not enough have been willing to hold their noses and lend their votes accordingly.  Boris Johnson may well have a constitutional fight on his hands after this election.

For Scottish constituency results please click here.

The devolved election pages will be updated throughout Saturday.

SATURDAY'S FRONT PAGES

Saturday's front pages are not surprisingly dominated by Tory success and Labour failure.  Click on an image to enlarge.

ACTIVISTS WERE 'NAKED' SAYS McDONNELL

While Jeremy Corbyn stayed out of the limelight on Friday, John McDonnell did the media rounds to lend his view of the election disaster.  Across his interviews he put across the same broad message and it was a valid one - it's one thing for Starmer to declare his a 'new leadership', but he ought to really let people in on what it is that makes it new and different.  McDonnell argued that Labour activists were sent into battle for this election essentially 'naked', with not a single party policy on which to promote their cause.

Here he is speaking to LBC's Shelagh Fogarty.

McDonnell went on to defend Corbyn's policies, suggesting that they were not only popular, but the Tories are now implementing some of them.  Unfortunately, on that basis, if Starmer moves to the left as McDonnell would like to see - they will already be outflanked by the most left-wing Tory Party in history!

PCC ELECTIONS

Below are the results for the police and crime commissioner elections 2021.

LEWIS LASHES OUT AT VOTING SYSTEM

Labour's Clive Lewis couldn't provide much direction for his party when he spoke to BBC News earlier, saying that the left and centre-left needed to 'work out' how to stop the Tories.  Lewis, who is on the far left of the party, suggested that the 'political voting system we have in this country overwhelmingly favours the Tories'.  Funny that, considering the same voting system brought Labour three general election victories in 1997, 2001 and 2005...

ADONIS CALLS FOR KEIR'S HEAD

While his colleagues have kept a calm head, crazed Labour peer Andrew Adonis has called for Keir Starmer to go.  Even the far left wing of the party has so far refrained from agitating for a new leader, but Blairite Adonis is sounding off dire warnings this election could 'be the end'.  Adonis had been a Starmer supporter prior to this election.

Speaking to Andrew Pierce, Adonis suggests that a 'right-wing populist movement' could rise up if Labour continues its decline.  A viable third party is desperately needed to boost our democracy, but naturally Adonis sees this as a bad thing.

Click below for the clip.

Adonis is not holding back, even if he's got virtually no support within the party.  So far today he has appeared on BBC News, Channel 4 News and has even managed to write an article for The Times, not to mention his incessant tweeting.

The peer has been mocked by some Brexiteers for suggesting that Labour needs to 'listen to the voters', considering he did everything but listen to the voters following the 2016 Leave vote.  He is one of very few Labour figures who continue to ignore that mandate and demand Britain rejoins the EU.  Does he not realise that one of the key factors in Labour's decline is primarily that sneering elitist Remainer attitude?

Going by his latest tweets, he does not.

Labour's 'natural supporters' used to be the working class.  The clue's in the name dickhead.  If the Labour Party is now the natural home of woke middle class Remainers, which it is, then Andy you are welcome to watch it sink without trace north of Watford.

FRONTBENCHER RESIGNS

Khalid Mahmood has resigned from Labour's front bench.  The MP for Birmingham Perry Barr had been a shadow defence minister, but has stood down after publishing an article via Policy Exchange, which is intriguingly a conservative thinktank.  He also predicts that Labour will lose the West Midlands mayoral election, the largest mayoral contest outside London.

Mahmood writes:
"The Tories are deep into what was once safe Labour territory - the industrial heartlands of the North - with a 7,000 majority of their own.  In the West Midlands it looks again like Labour will lose out on the mayoral race and more.  Labour has lost touch with ordinary British people.  A London-based bourgeoisie, with the support of brigades of woke social media warriors, has effectively captured the party.  They mean well, of course, but their politics - obsessed with identity, division and even tech utopianism - have more in common with those of Californian high society than the kind of people who voted in Hartlepool yesterday.  The loudest voices in the Labour movement over the past year in particular have focused more on pulling down Churchill’s statue than they have on helping people pull themselves up in the world.  No wonder it is doing better among rich urban liberals and young university graduates than it is amongst the most important part of its traditional electoral coalition, the working-class".
He's not wrong is he?

LIVERPOOL MAYORAL RESULT

No great shock here, but Labour have held the Liverpool mayoral position, albeit with a reduced majority.  Joanne Anderson - no relation to her controversial predecessor Joe - had to go to a final round run-off with the independent candidate.  Labour won this contest outright in 2016.

STARMER SPEAKS, FINALLY

A defiant Keir Starmer has finally spoken out and says he's 'taking full responsibility' for Labour's election woes.  Pushed on what he meant by 'change', Starmer offered little substance.  That appears to be a major factor in why his party is going from bad to worse.

Click below for the clip.

VINE SLAMS WALLPAPER STUNT

Labour moderate Alison McGovern has been grilled by Jeremy Vine over Labour's election disaster.  In somewhat uncharacteristically aggressive mode, Vine lambasted Starmer's 'pathetic' wallpaper stunt.
Vine began by asking her the deliberately provocative question of whether Labour should invite Jeremy Corbyn back to the leadership.  McGovern was very careful not to criticise Corbyn, unlike some of her comrades, in particular Peter Mandelson who was scathing about Corbyn earlier today.

HARTLEPOOL CANDIDATES RESPOND

How some of the defeated Hartlepool candidates responded on Twitter, beginning with Labour's Paul Williams.

EDWINA FAILS TO DELIVER

Despite the Tories picking up council seats left, right and centre, poor old Edwina Currie has failed to win a seat in Derbyshire.  The lockdown enthusiast had come out of retirement to contest the Whaley Bridge ward on High Peak Borough Council.

REACTION FROM THE HARD LEFT

The hard left of the Labour Party may smell blood as Keir Starmer's woes mount.  This is how some of Corbyn's loyal followers reacted on Twitter.

The hard left Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown let rip at Starmer's embrace of patriotism in a series of tweets.

REED BLAMES CORBYN

Starmer supporter Steve Reed is among the Labour moderates who are laying the blame for the ongoing election car crash at the feet of Jeremy Corbyn.  The frontbencher told Sky News this morning that voters didn't 'yet understand' that the party was now different to the one they rejected in 2019.  Just a reminder that this sneering response is coming from a London MP in support of another London MP, while blaming another London MP.

Reed also appeared to take aim at Corbyn's predecessors: "People like Keir.  For the first time in many years, actually, we have a leader that people can see as an alternative prime minister".  His frontbench colleague Ed Miliband will have raised an eyebrow at that statement.

DONCASTER MAYORAL RESULT

Labour have held the first of the elected mayoral contests to be announced.  Ros Jones held Doncaster with a reduced majority.  In the 2017 mayoral election Jones won outright with 50.9 per cent of the vote.  This time round she required a final round run-off in which second preference votes are counted.

TORIES GAIN HARLOW COUNCIL

The Conservatives have gained Harlow District Council from Labour.  Mark Ingall, the leader of the council, was among the Labour councillors who lost their seats.  Labour had held the council since 2012.

Tory MP Robert Halfon tweeted from the count.

TORIES GAIN HARTLEPOOL

The Conservatives have taken Hartlepool from Labour with a 16 per cent swing.  It is the first time Labour have lost the seat since its creation in 1974 and the first time the town of Hartlepool has had a Conservative MP since 1964.  The 16 per cent swing is the largest swing to a governing party since World War II.
