LABOUR'S WITHDRAWAL 19

Boris Johnson enjoyed a rare victory on Tuesday as nineteen Labour rebels helped him to a majority of 30 on the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

This was the vote where we finally uncovered those Labour MPs who had postured about supporting Brexit, but had yet to deliver.  They finally defied the whips and the hard left threats of McDonnell and Lansman.  The nineteen were as follows.

There were some surprises here, in particular the names of Mike Hill, Jo Platt and Lisa Nandy.  There were also some notable absences.  Despite flirting with the notion of a Brexit deal for months now, Stevie Kinnock backed out and voted against the bill.  Two-faced Lucy Powell also voted against the bill, while Justin Madders and Yvonne Fovargue abstained.  Hardcore Brexiteer Kate Hoey also abstained from the vote, but she never backed May's deal either and she is less likely to back Johnson's deal given her Protestant Northern Ireland background.  It's complicated.

Sadly, most of the 19 Labour rebels reverted back to form and voted down the timetable for the bill they had just voted for.  It won't spare them awful abuse from Remainers on social media though.  Only Barron, Fitzpatrick, Flint and Mann backed up their initial vote, with Kate Hoey providing the fifth Labour vote.

The PM has now put the bill on hold, for motives unknown, a decision that led Donald Tusk to announce his intention to extend Article 50 (collective groan).  Even die hard supporters of Boris Johnson are now beginning to ask serious questions about his apparent lack of countermeasures and the now strongly suspected absence of a masterplan that would have got us out next week.  A general election between now and the next Brexit deadline of January 31st is now inevitable.  The problem for Boris is that he is going into this election having failed to deliver Brexit and as such the Brexit Party will still be in play.  He simply has to swallow his pride (if he has any left) and cut a deal with Nigel Farage.  The Brexit Party can take out Labour MPs in the north of England, but it can only do so if the Tories stand aside.  The Brexit Party can then stand down elsewhere, in order to allow the Tories a free run in Labour marginals, particularly in the south of England.  It's a no brainer, but having seen the debacle of the last few weeks, we have to ask if there are any brains on either side of the Commons.

"IT'LL GET RID OF YOU"

When Anna Soubry spoke during Tuesday's debate she made clear her opposition to a general election.  It's no wonder considering she is history no matter what daft party name she dreams up.  A seemingly worse for wear John Mann was on hand to remind her of this precise scenario - "It'll get rid of you" he quips several times while laughing wildly.  He's partially obscured during the clip, but certainly appears to be off his tits...

Even Dave Lammy appears to find Soubry an amusement, but then he knows he will still be around in the next Parliament.  Soubry's Broxtowe constituency returned a 53% Leave vote and she has next to zero chance of being re-elected if she chooses to stand under her Independent Group For Change Remain Alliance Change UK Independent Group banner.

Broxtowe general election 2017

Anna Soubry (Con) 25,983 (46.8%) +1.6%
Greg Marshall (Lab) 25,120 (45.3%) +8.1%
Tim Hallam (Lib Dem) 2,247 (4.0%) +0.1%
Fran Loi (UKIP) 1,477 (2.7%) -8.0%
Pat Morton (Green) 681 (1.2%) -1.7%

MORGAN'S INANE TWITTER TUESDAY

Piers Morgan revived his Twitter spat with Dave Lammy earlier this evening after he appeared to suggest the daft remoaner may have been napping in the Commons.  It's only three weeks since their last clash.

Lammy fired back saying that the video had been cropped and he was actually using his mobile phone at the time (fair point).  Morgan wasn't going to leave it there and it rumbled on...

One MP who was definitely nodding off today was Labour frontbencher Barry Gardiner.  One Twitter user said they were quite impressed he could manage it without his Harrods sheets, a reference to Gardiner's involvement in the expenses scandal.

Meanwhile, Piers Morgan followed his Lammy exchange by taking on two more famous remoaners, namely Alastair Campbell and the odious Gary Lineker, although sadly this revolved around who had the most Twitter followers.  Sad.

HARASSMENT DISPARITY

Labour is renowned for dragging its feet when it comes to investigating alleged misbehaviour of party members.  However, a very quick turnaround has bucked the trend in the case of Hartlepool MP Mike Hill.  Hill was suspended last month after an allegation of sexual harassment, but in less than four weeks he has been reinstated, albeit after the claimant dropped the allegation.  Even so, compare his treatment to that of Kelvin Hopkins, the MP for Luton North.  He has been under a similar investigation for almost two years.  Hopkins was suspended in November 2017 after a female activist claimed he hugged her 'too tightly' in 2014 and made 'inappropriate contact'.  Despite this supposedly distressing incident she later visited him in Parliament, but says that a few weeks later he sent her a 'suggestive' text message.

There is no indication if and when the absurdly long investigation into Hopkins will reach a decision, but we have a feeling it will be long enough to ensure that he does not stand as a Labour candidate in the next general election.  This is undoubtedly a political decision, rather than suspicion of guilt.  He is one of the few Labour MPs who backed the Leave campaign in 2016.  He also continues to support Brexit while suspended from the party, most recently voting against the Letwin amendment.  Is the disparity between his harassment case and others a coincidence?

Remainer Mike Hill is not alone in getting a quick turnaround when it comes to harassment claims.  Clive Lewis also received a speedy decision when he faced a harassment claim in 2017.  The complaint against Lewis was made public two days after Hopkins was suspended, but Lewis was not suspended despite the similarity between the two cases.  An activist claimed Lewis had groped her during a hug, but his case was thrown out the following month.  Lewis is an ardent Remainer.

One could also query the motivation of the complainant in Hopkins' case.  Three years is a long time to hold back, during which she went on to campaign for Remain in 2016.  She now argues for a second referendum, something vehemently opposed by none other than Kelvin Hopkins.

Hopkins' accuser Ava Etemadzadeh (circled) is an ardent Remainer

Coincidence?  What about the other Labour MPs who backed Leave in 2016?  Let's take a look...

Frank Field - resigned from Labour after vote of no confidence
Roger Godsiff - facing reselection battle for next election
Kate Hoey - standing down at next election after vote of no confidence
John Mann - standing down at next election to take up government role

Of the Labour Leave campaign backers in 2016, only one (Graham Stringer) is currently likely to make it the next election unscathed.

DRAKEFORD'S REAL AGENDA

The First Minister of Wales has once again added his voice to the chorus of Brexit blockers.  Mark Drakeford has written to both Boris Johnson and Donald Tusk in joint letters co-signed by Scotland's First Minister.  The two letters are very different.  While the one to Boris states that the two devolved governments need more time to assess the Withdrawal Bill and lend assent, the one to Tusk is eminently more revealing.

So there we have it.  By his own admission, the extension is not about extra time for scrutiny, but extra time to force the British people to vote again.  This tactic is in line with national Labour policy and Keir Starmer has already suggested that Labour would only back the agreement if a second referendum is attached.  However, Drakeford has no mandate to make such demands.  Wales voted Leave in 2016 and in the European elections this year the Brexit Party finished top of the poll with more than twice the amount of votes received by Drakeford's Labour.  His persistent remoaning continues to alienate voters to such an extent that an opinion poll earlier this year put the Tories ahead of Labour in Wales.  More of the same please Mark.

CAMPAIGN STATS 21.10.19

The main Facebook page will continue to be out of use for the rest of this week thanks to a shocking act of censorship last Friday.  We will remain on the backup page during this period and possibly beyond.  We were ticking along quite nicely up to this point, but even with no new posts since Friday we are still receiving huge traffic and, remarkably, post engagement has shown a small increase on last week's figures.  As we are now using the backup page new likes and follows will hopefully balloon in the week ahead.

We will be adding a fifth weekly article to the blog later this week.  Each Thursday (up to and possibly beyond the next general election) we will be compiling a report focusing on a different mainland city each week.  This will not include London at present, given its huge size and no less than 73 constituencies.  Instead we will begin this Thursday with a focus on Birmingham, its ten constituencies and MPs.  The weekly line up now looks like this:

Thursday:  Focus On...
Friday:  Council By-Elections
Saturday:  Week In Cartoons
Sunday:  Most Shared
Monday:  Campaign Stats

Despite the setback on social media, thanks for continuing to make this campaign a success and don't forget to chuck a couple of quid in the online tin if you can.

MOST SHARED: WEEK 235

On Wednesday we predicted Corbyn would reject Boris's revised withdrawal agreement before actually seeing it.  The following day we posted the following meme and this was vindicated by a Daily Mail article that appeared on Friday.

The mock up of Corbyn as a clown was posted in the comments of the Facebook page and saved for future reference.  We added the text and speech bubble and the combo proved very popular with 5,302 shares.  This was one of our final posts before the page was censored.  We are now operating on the backup page for the rest of the week, maybe longer.  Be sure to follow us there!

THE LABOUR SIX

It's not clear at the moment what the next step will be.  Will the dreaded letter be sent and if not, what then?  What is clear is that despite various MPs arguing that this amendment is not about frustrating Brexit, one only has to look at the reaction of Remainers to it.

Credit where it is due there were six Labour MPs who opposed this amendment.  They were:

Kevin Barron
Ronnie Campbell
Jim Fitzpatrick
Caroline Flint
Kate Hoey
John Mann

Former Labour MPs Ian Austin, Frank Field, Ivan Lewis and John Woodcock also opposed the amendment as did the currently suspended Kelvin Hopkins.

Four Labour MPs abstained, as follows:

Sarah Champion
Rosie Cooper
Melanie Onn
Derek Twigg

HYPOCRITES ON THE MARCH

As proceedings inside the Commons rumble on, thousands of remoaners gather outside calling for the Leave mandate to be overturned.  Some of them like to refer to Leave voters by the racial term 'gammon'.  Funny that, because we struggled to find anything but gammon on their march today...

PIGTROUGHERY FROM CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS

Rhondda MP Chris Bryant sparked outrage yesterday when he stood up in Parliament and requested that child care costs be provided for members who had to work an exceptionally rare Saturday...

This guy is supposed to represent a solid Labour constituency in the Valleys.  Could he be any further removed from a working class community?

ODDS SHORTENING ON BREXIT DEAL

The bookies now have Boris Johnson's revised withdrawal agreement passing tomorrow as 'odds on'.  Ladbrokes and Coral have the ayes at 8/11, while Betfred and Paddy Power have 4/6.  There's clearly not much in it as the same bookies have the deal failing at evens (Ladbrokes/Coral), 11/10 (Paddy Power) and 6/5 (Betfred).  However, all major bookmakers report that odds of the deal passing are shortening and odds of it failing are drifting, albeit it's worth noting that this doesn't take into account potentially fatal amendments that would pave the way for another Brexit delay.

The shortening of odds may have something to do with the tiny trickle of Labour MPs voicing their support for the deal throughout the afternoon and into this evening.  With the DUP and every opposition party opposed to the deal, Boris will need as many Labour rebels as possible to get his deal through.  Labour MPs who have either indicated or are expected to vote in favour of the agreement are as follows:

Ronnie Campbell
Sarah Champion (expected)
Jim Fitzpatrick (expected)
Caroline Flint (expected)
John Mann
Melanie Onn

Others who are keeping their cards close to their chest include Kevin Barron, Gloria De Piero, Stevie Kinnock, Stephanie Peacock, Ruth Smeeth, Gareth Snell and Graham Stringer.

Several independents are also undeclared, but it's highly likely that Ian Austin, Frank Field and Kelvin Hopkins will back the government.

Every single one of these MPs have faced the full keyboard tapping fury of anti-Brexit Labour activists and Remainers at large.  The bile and hate that has spewed forth will hopefully toughen their resolve, but we don't have long to wait now.  One thing is for sure - if biased Bercow and his Remain Alliance have anything to do with it, proceedings will be far from simple.

SILENCED BY FACEBOOK

Facebook has taken a brand new step in censoring our page today.  Just before noon the Dublin mafia decided to censor our posts for ONE WEEK!  We can still use the page, but none of our posts will appear in anyone's news feed - rendering it useless.  This is the message we currently see at the top of our page.

This is a damaging blow to our campaign as it comes on the eve of potentially one of the most crucial political moments in our history.  As always, we've reverted to the backup page, but unfortunately we can only reach a tiny fraction of the 90,000 people who follow the main page.  If you are a Facebook follower please be sure to follow us here or click on the image below.

We've lodged an appeal against the decision, but won't hold our breath.  They never responded to our last two appeals.

So why have they taken this latest course of action?  As per usual they have not told us which policy or policies have been violated nor which post or posts are 'guilty'.  However, if we look at what was posted this morning it becomes clearer.  Last Saturday Facebook removed a link we posted, a fairly innocuous story from the Daily Mail about Jess Phillips.  Facebook identified this link as 'spam'.  This morning we shared another story from the Daily Mail, a very relevant story about Jeremy Corbyn having rejected the revised Brexit deal before he had even read it.  Three hours later we were silenced.  It's surely no coincidence.  We strongly suspect that had these links been from a left-wing site such as the Guardian there would not be an issue.

There is no doubt that we have been increasingly targeted by Facebook over the last twelve months.  See below for a catalogue of incidents during this period.

October 2019 - Daily Mail article removed
October 2018 - grooming gangs post taken down

We will be taking some measures over the weekend to try and make the best of a bad situation, but by and large we're going to take a big hit over the next week.  If you appreciate what we've done so far and really want to help, please consider a small donation.  We can't do this without you.

LANSMAN THREATENS REBELS

Momentum chief Jon Lansman has tweeted a direct threat to Labour MPs thinking of supporting the revised withdrawal agreement tomorrow.  He has pinned the threat to the top of his Twitter feed.  Never one to miss an opportunity to purge moderates and replace them with Corbyn loyalists.

Meanwhile, Labour rebel John Mann appeared unfazed by suggestions that deal-backing MPs could lose the whip.  Mind you, he's standing down soon anyway to take up a government post, so it's no skin off his teeth.  Whether the threats will resonate with the likes of Caroline Flint, Stevie Kinnock and co is unclear, but we'll find out tomorrow.  Mann told Sky News he is backing the Brexit deal and took aim at John McDonnell in the process.  That hair though...

LABOUR'S MULTI-FACETED CIVIL WAR

Labour is currently tearing itself apart over Boris's Brexit deal.  MPs voicing support for the deal are being condemned and many activists, including the odious opportunist Owen Jones, are calling for the whip to be withdrawn.  As predicted Corbyn was always going to reject the deal regardless of what was in it.  Such was his eagerness to voice his opposition to it that he aired his feelings BEFORE the text of the agreement had been released.  Brexiteer Ronnie Campbell appeared on last night's Newsnight to voice his support for the deal and hit out at "100 per cent Remainer" Keir Starmer.

John McDonnell responded to Ronnie's appearance this morning by telling Radio 4's Today programme:  "I’m going to have a chat with Ronnie, because he is a good socialist and all his life he has fought alongside me to protect trade union rights and develop trade union rights".  McDonnell's recent behaviour has in itself caused a gulf to appear at the very heart of the ultra left Corbyn machine.  Various unilateral announcements have led some to believe that he is asserting control over the party, something that has even been referred to as a 'silent coup'.  His comments on a second Scottish independence referendum sparked a major conflict in the party, something that dragged on for weeks until Corbyn finally dared to contradict him.  More recently he announced that he and Corbyn would stand down if they lost the next election, but again this appeared to be news to the 'leader'.

One pro-Corbyn voice lashed out vehemently against John McDonnell yesterday.  Forthright, as ever...

On top of everything else, there is also bitter disagreement over the timing of a general election.  Many Labour MPs fear an election because they perceive their leader as 'unelectable' and consequently a threat to their own electability, while ultra-Remainers refuse to countenance such a prospect until they get their so-called 'People's Vote'.  Total shambles.

COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS 17.10.19

Four by-elections last night - two in Yorkshire, one in Liverpool and one in Kent.  Labour finally broke a two-month old duck in which the party has failed to increase its vote share in a single council by-election since August.  The sorry record was broken thanks to the Labour heartland of Liverpool, where the party increased its share by 5.5%.  Coincidentally this was the same margin that affected the party in Kent, unfortunately going the other way.  This election saw the Tory candidate take a seat from Labour with a whopping 21% vote surge.  The Conservatives enjoyed a similar surge in both Yorkshire seats and were up marginally in Liverpool also.

SMEETH TO CLING ON

Labour MP Ruth Smeeth has given an emotional response to Louise Ellman's resignation.  Smeeth, who is also Jewish, spoke out in an interview published on her social media accounts.  She says she is not ready to give up on Labour (yet) and could well be the last remaining female Jewish MP for Labour after the next election - Corbyn's footsoldiers are currently trying to dislodge Margaret Hodge in Barking.  Smeeth has not been targeted for deselection (yet), but her suggestion that she may vote for Boris Johnson's Brexit deal on Saturday may well be the trigger.

ELLMAN SLAMS CORBYN

Liverpool Riverside MP Louise Ellman has been doing the media rounds this morning to discuss her decision to bin the Labour Party.  She denounces Jeremy Corbyn and the anti-Semitism scandal, in particular the prospect of Corbyn walking into Number Ten.  Why Ellman feels that this is more likely now than it was in 2017 is unclear, but with Brexit hanging in the balance of course anything is possible.

These are the interviews she conducted this morning with ITV, Sky and Radio 4's Today programme.

ELLMAN BINS THE LABOUR PARTY

Ellman becomes not only the second Jewish MP to be driven out of Labour, but the second Jewish female MP to be driven out of the party in Liverpool.  Luciana Berger was subjected to immense pressure and abuse to the extent that she attended the 2018 party conference under a police escort.  She will stand for the Liberal Democrats at the next election, but in London.

Anti-Semitism asides, there does appear to be a pattern emerging on Merseyside.  Ellman was facing a so-called 'trigger ballot' in which she was being forced to fight for her seat in a reselection process.  She had previously made complaints about an influx of hard left Momentum activists into her local CLP (Constituency Labour Party) and was clearly not guaranteed to win the ballot.  Berger would undoubtedly be facing the same process now, if she had stayed in the party.  Another who would have been facing the process was Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead.  He quit Labour last year after being targeted by activists over his support for Brexit.  A vote of no confidence was held by his CLP a month prior to his resignation, albeit this was non-binding.  A fourth MP on Merseyside, Blairite Stephen Twigg, has announced he is standing down at the next election.

It is the selection process for Twigg's seat that is currently creating lots of fuss in Liverpool Labour.  A popular local councillor has been snubbed, while at the same time various potential candidates from around the country have made it onto the shortlist, including a councillor all the way from Islington no less.  A coincidence or the hand of Corbyn and his enforcers?

Merseyside has clearly been singled out for Momentum's purge and it's no surprise as to why.  The region includes some of the safest Labour seats in the country, four of which are in the top ten safest seats of any party - including Ellman and Twigg's.  Therefore, it's prime territory to install your most loyal comrades.  It's a despotic shame that four rebels have fallen to make way for the Soviets, but that's the nature of the beast unleashed by the rise of Corbyn.

Louise Ellman's resignation letter can be seen below (click to enlarge).

HEALTH & SAFETY BLAMED FOR SOCIALIST'S DEATH

Bethan Roper

A report into the death of a young socialist has blamed inadequate health and safety for her unfortunate demise.  Bethan Roper, 28, from Penarth near Cardiff was killed on a moving train near Bath last December.  She had stuck her head out of the window of the train and was struck by an overhanging branch leaving her with fatal head injuries.  The train was moving approximately 75 miles per hour at the time and she was pronounced dead when the train arrived in Bristol.

The report, carried out by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, found that trees along the route had not been inspected since 2009 and a warning sign did "adequately convey the level of risk".

The sign that supposedly did not effectively convey the risk

While the loss of life is regrettable, it's a sad indictment of our pampered risk-managed society that health and safety should be blamed for someone's own idiocy.

Miss Roper was a member of the Socialist Party and worked for the Welsh Refugee Council.

MUTTON-HEADED LAURA'S CAR CRASH

Following the Queen's Speech frontbencher Laura Pidcock spoke to Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy and showed viewers that she is in way over her head (like so many of her colleagues).  It wasn't quite as bad as an Abbott or Burgon interview, but she is clearly very inexperienced at this game (despite being persistently spoken up as a future leader).  At times during the interview she appears confused, stalls for time and repeats over and over the same thing - "hypothetical" is a popular word - and says that Labour has "always said that people should have the final say" (on Brexit).  However, she was elected on a manifesto that said Labour accepts the referendum result.  As a further example of her naivety/stupidity she doesn't appear to know what meat is produced from sheep, despite the fact she represents a rural constituency.  Shocking, watch below.

If this is the future leader of the Labour Party, they are in for a long stretch in opposition.

No mention of a second referendum in this 2017 leaflet

PIDCOCK'S DEEP DISCOMFORT

Frontbencher Laura Pidcock is often spoken of as a future Labour leader, but the people tipping her generally share her far left ideals.  Yesterday she tweeted her deep discomfort at the sight of Her Majesty's arrival for the big speech.

This is standard leftist propaganda.  It's not so much about caring for the poor as it is about expressing their intense dislike of anything that symbolises our nation, its history and culture.  Leftists are not proud of their country, they are only ashamed of it.  That's why you never see a Union flag at a Labour rally, in fact you're more likely to see a Soviet flag or that of Palestine.

Having only been elected in 2017 this would have been the second State Opening of Parliament witnessed by Pidcock.  At the relatively young age of 32 and representing a solid Labour seat she may have to get used to such "opulence" - that is unless this country suffers the huge misfortune of having a far left government.  It's not inconceivable in those circumstances that the monarchy would be deposed, after all that is the ultimate aim of the likes of Labour Marxists such as Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbott and Burgon.  Furthermore, in the event of such a catastrophic regime, there would be a lot more than 1.6m foodbank parcels and a lot more homeless too!

NO, WE ARE NOT SPAMMERS

Our Facebook 'friends' in Dublin threw another censorship curve ball our way on Saturday night.  While the moderators have chastised us for memes on numerous occasions, for the first time ever they took down a link we shared.  You'd be forgiven for thinking it must have been something very dodgy indeed.  In actual fact it was merely a Daily Mail article regarding Jess Phillips potentially running for the Labour leadership.  Fairly innocuous, but it was bizarrely identified as 'spam'.  See below for the messages that greeted us on Saturday night (click to enlarge).

Firstly, there was nothing "misleading" or "inaccurate" about the post.  In fact there was no accompanying message and it was entirely up to the user what they did with it.  We are not the Daily Mail nor do we have anything to gain financially from people visiting their site.  We know that tech companies do not like the Daily Mail because it is not reporting from a left-wing perspective.  Try getting a Daily Mail article to pop up when you search for news items in Google, it won't happen unless you specifically type in 'Daily Mail'.  You'll get the Guardian though no problem.

On average we post 3-4 times a day on Facebook, we don't bombard people and we are clearly not spammers.  We requested a review of this case, but two days on nothing has come back and the post remains deleted.  Of course this all follows a pattern of Facebook censorship and bias (see below).

It has also come to our attention that their algorithm has taken a dim view to our own website.  For example if we share a BBC link it reaches thousands of people.  If we share a link to our own site it generally reaches dozens.  The only surefire way to keep in touch is to visit the site directly on a regular basis.  Don't rely on Facebook to keep you posted.

SKINNER'S NOT GOING

As MPs were summoned for the Queen's Speech today a familiar voice rang out.  Left-wing republican fossil Dennis Skinner traditionally heckles Black Rod as he/she enters the Commons.  This year he blurted out "No, I'm not going", although someone appears to have cut the microphone as he began to speak.  Watch below.

With a general election looming, it's ironic that he should shout "I'm not going", because it's clear that the only way in which this guy would leave Parliament is in a wooden box.  He's 87 now and if he makes it beyond the next election for another five years he will be the oldest Member of Parliament in history, all the while denying a younger person of working age the opportunity of employment!

In preparation for his traditional outburst, Russia Today produced this compilation featuring some of his previous Black Rod heckles.

CAMPAIGN STATS 14.10.19

With Parliament prorogued it was a fairly quiet week as recent history goes.  This is reflected in the following stats.  We've added one more stat this week - the number of Facebook posts.  We actually posted 21 times on Facebook, but the moderators removed one on Saturday night (more on that later).  It was very nice to cross over the 90,000 threshold for likes, but again not much progress on Twitter.  This week should be very busy as we countdown to the deadline for a Brexit deal and Saturday's emergency session in the Commons (oh, and another remainer protest).

IF CORBYN GOES, WHO NEXT?

A couple of days ago John McDonnell stated that he and Corbyn would stand down were Labour to lose the next election.  However, on Sophy Ridge's show this morning Corbyn himself was somewhat evasive when she put it to him...

While the opinion polls suggest another Labour defeat is on the cards, a lot can and will happen between now and then.  Britain's failure to Leave the EU at the end of this month could open the door for him and a coalition ally, namely the SNP.  This is precisely why Labour refused to hold an election sooner rather than later, hoping to capitalise on discontent among voters, either with another Brexit delay or the fallout of a no deal exit.

However, the vultures are already beginning to smell blood.  Yesterday the hideous narcissist Jess Phillips threw her hat in the ring for a leadership election.  A wee bit premature Jess, but if an election is to be held next month and Labour are beaten, there could be a new leader in place by the spring - if Corbyn stands down that is.  No-one is taking Phillips seriously, despite McDonnell's assessment that the next leader should be a woman.  There are plenty of other potential female candidates and in any case the next leader will almost certainly come from the hard left.  Corbyn and McDonnell haven't spent the last three years slowly purging the party of moderates only to surrender it back to the 'Blairite scum'.

It's highly likely that in any leadership contest there would be a 'continuity Corbyn' candidate that would romp to victory on the back of what is now an overwhelmingly hard left membership.  One potential name who fits that bill, and is also a woman, is Laura Pidcock.  She only has two year's Parliamentary experience and is only 32, but she is constantly touted as a 'future leader' and would be unencumbered by the historical scandals that have dogged the leadership of Corbyn.  Definitely one to watch, as is Rebecca Long-Bailey.  She is not seen as hard left as Pidcock, but has consistently backed Corbyn throughout his leadership and has three year's front bench experience.

The only other hard left name in the frame is Clive Lewis, but Corbynistas will not have forgotten or forgiven his rumoured plotting against Corbyn's leadership two years ago (supported by no less than two-faced turncoat Owen Jones).  The current bookies favourite to succeed Corbyn is the painfully dull Keir Starmer, but he is neither hard left or Corbynista.  He is, of course, a hardcore Remainer, but then so are most of the other potential runners.  So let's look at how the bookies currently see the field...

4/1 - Keir Starmer (Holborn & St Pancras since 2015)
6/1 - Rebecca Long-Bailey (Salford & Eccles since 2015)
10/1 - Emily Thornberry (Islington South & Finsbury since 2004)
11/1 - Angela Rayner (Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015)
12/1 - Laura Pidcock (North West Durham since 2017)
16/1 - Yvette Cooper (Normanton, Pontefract & Castleford since 1997)
18/1 - Clive Lewis (Norwich South since 2015)
25/1 - Tom Watson (West Bromwich East since 2001)
33/1 - Lisa Nandy (Wigan since 2010)
50/1 - Dawn Butler (Brent Central since 2017)
66/1 - Jonathan Ashworth (Leicester South since 2011), Hilary Benn (Leeds Central since 1999), Jess Phillips (Birmingham Yardley since 2015)

MOST SHARED: WEEK 234

The news that John Bercow has been conspiring with the President of the European Parliament in order to frustrate Brexit in the UK Parliament should have created more of a storm than it did.  While many newspapers carried the story, there was barely a mention in broadcast media - nothing on BBC, Sky or ITV.  No great surprise there really.  He'll be gone in three weeks anyway, regardless of whether he and his allies have succeeded (again) in halting Brexit.  Hopefully his last day in the chair will coincide with Brexit Day - third time lucky!
